‘22 CA C Yohan Traore

Wow, four-star big man Yohan Traore of Dream Vision was stupid good on Friday. His No. 2 ranking looked to low as the big and strong post swished jump shots, hossed guys for rebounds and generally dominated when he had the ball. Creighton, Kansas, LSU, Gonzaga, Ohio State and Tennessee are among those who have been really active with him and he’s seen TCU and Texas unofficially. Arkansas and USC jumped in with offers on Friday.

Tennessee basketball’s history with Traore goes back further than that, though.

"I speak to them a lot,” Traore told 247Sports recruiting analyst Brandon Jenkins. “The coaching staff has been recruiting me pretty hard since the spring and they really like my game.”

Traore, a native of France who attends Prolific Prep in Napa, Calif., picked up an offer from Tennessee over the weekend, along with offers from USC and Arkansas.

Jenkins reported Gonzaga, LSU, Ohio State and Tennessee as the schools currently recruiting Traore the hardest.
Tennessee obviously has connections to France during the Rick Barnes era, previously through Yves Pons and now with freshman Quentin Diboundje.

"I want to play for a program that will be loyal to me and allow me to me play my game,” Traore told Jenkins. "I also want to play for a family-oriented team."
Traore is the No. 13 overall center in the class and is ranked No. 11 overall in the state of California.

Jenkins reported that Traore could be in for another jump in the prospect rankings when ratings are updated in the fall.

“It has been clear this weekend that he is a prospect that deserves to be in the five-star conversation,” Jenkins wrote. “The 6-foot-10 big man by way of France has caught the attention of coaches with his mobility, aggression, length, and incredibly soft touch.”

Not sure why I thought we had already offered him, but was curious to see that we didn't offer until this last week, yet are still deep in the thick of it.

The question is do we want Ernest Udeh Jr or Yohan Traore more
I don’t pretend to know the answer to which is a better prospect but if getting Traore helps build a French pipeline then the answer is Traore. Seems like a lot of talent coming out of France lately.

I highly doubt our recruiters are actively looking to the country of France, much less building a pipeline of any sort. The relationships with the schools and programs are the important pieces. Besides, out of everyone mentioned, Pons is the only one that was actually recruited from France. The others are French prospects playing for American programs.

I get that but a lot of the French prospects work through the same academies and know one another coming up. It is a fairly small basketball community in France when you get to that elite level French Recruits - Think outside the box

I would be willing to bet that Traore and Dibundge know one another on some level assuming they both grew up in France and came over for their final high school years. It is about relationships and comfort level and I believe an up and coming French player sees a couple of his country men playing for one team it gives us a benefit.

It’s kinda like the Udeh recruitment, I don’t know if it’s an official offer coming from Barnes or what but we’ve recruited these guys awhile and from my understanding they’ve had offers but not until recently to they announce one publicly.

Ok, kinda what I thought, too. Seems like we had been a little too involved for there not to be something solid.

Speaking of French prospects, well respected scouts are calling this guy the #1 pick in the 2023 draft and a once in a generational talent. He recently dominated Chet Holmgren in an international match.

He was supposedly the best player in the international U19 tournament that Team USA won with Kennedy Chandler running point.

Edit: Those highlights appear to be from that very tournament.

He would be the #1 prospect in the 2022 class as well. He is the best future prospect regardless of class

I think I heard Traore's name when they were showing the highlights against team USA. Anyone know if he played for France in this tournament?

It’s been eight months since Yohan Traore left France for Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.) to get more exposure on the hardwood, but over a four-day span at the adidas 3SSB in Hoover, Ala., Traore seized the moment and had his most productive run, arguably finishing the talent-ladened event as the most impressive prospect...Traore dominated the competition all weekend, averaging 25 points and 14 rebounds a game to lead Dream Vision (Nev.).

The 6-foot-10 forward showed the full arsenal of his offensive repertoire, scoring in every way imaginable while owning rebounds and changing shots on the defensive end. Traore was extremely agile and mobile and was masterful at switching on the perimeter and recovering. His exceptional footwork made life difficult for opposing bigs, out-maneuvering them to consistently set himself up for high percentage shots. Traore also showed an efficient jump shot and shot 80% from the free-throw line.
