MLS NEXT has formed a strategic alliance with the Girls Academy (GA), a leading youth development platform for female soccer players in the United States, to work together on technical standards, innovation, membership opportunities, and event integrations to enhance player development throughout North America.
“Our strategic alliance with the Girls Academy fosters an aligned development pathway for boys and girls aspiring to reach their highest potential,” said MLS NEXT General Manager Kyle Albrecht.
“We believe this is an important step in growing the sport in North America, as the alignment between both programs will greatly benefit players, families, and clubs.”
Founded in 2020, the Girls Academy provides elite competition and player development opportunities for female athletes, featuring 114 clubs and more than 16,000 players (including 48 clubs that have a boys team in MLS NEXT). GA member clubs compete in U13 to U19 age groups split into 11 conferences across the country.
MLS NEXT will integrate select GA clubs into a girls competition at the 2025 Generation adidas Cup, creating a high-level showcase at the prestigious international tournament.
“The Girls Academy is thrilled to partner with MLS NEXT on a shared vision to elevate players and standards to the highest level,” said Girls Academy Commissioner Patricia Hughes.
“MLS NEXT is the leader in the North American ecosystem and together we will focus on driving the game forward. Our collaboration will prioritize player-centric development, emphasizing the individual growth of each athlete. This alliance represents a significant step toward ensuring players, coaches and clubs have the resources they need to reach their full potential."
MLS NEXT and the GA will also work together on coaching education and innovation programs as well as hosting regional showcase events in which teams from MLS NEXT and the GA will attend. These regional events will simplify scheduling and travel for players, families, and clubs and ensure boys and girls teams are competing in front of college, professional, and national team scouts.

Joe Kirt announces Tennessee soccer signees

Tennessee soccer head coach Joe Kirt announced a trio of Lady Vol forward signees on Wednesday.

The Lady Vols signed Shae O’Rourke, Anaiyah Robinson and Kylee Simmons.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Kylee, Shae and Anaiyah to Rocky Top this spring,” Kirt said. “Each are proven goal-scorers and All-Conference recipients in our league who will bolster a talented group of returners.

“Individually, they bring their own attacking personality on the ball and in the box, creating quality scoring opportunities for both themselves and their teammates. Each will have a significant role in our program as we expect to bring another SEC championship back to Knoxville!”

O’Rourke enters her redshirt junior season after playing at Texas A&M and South Carolina. She was sidelined in 2024 due to injury with the Aggies. O’Rourke totaled 11 goals and six assists in two seasons at South Carolina.

Robinson appeared in 21 games, including 12 starts, as a freshman at Arkansas in 2024. She recorded 11 goals and one assist for the Razorbacks.

Simmons transferred to Tennessee after playing three seasons at Missouri. She totaled 16 goals and eight assists in 45 games for the Tigers.

From College Soccer Truth:

Big ruling by the court that JUCO athletes who play college sports can retain all 4 years of NCAA eligibility even if they play a year or two of JUCO

So essentially a kid can play 6 years now.

How does this affect college soccer?

• This is good for 🏈 and 🏀 but it won’t affect ⚽️ that much. Soccer in America is still very much an elitist country club sport. Those kids and families don’t care for JUCO soccer. Especially on the women’s side.

• Since soccer doesn’t provide full rides for everyone like your major sports do, there’s not a lot of kids that are going to stick around in college for 6 years.

• There will be 35 year old internationals playing college soccer by the time they finish their 6th year 😂

• It could slow down HS recruiting once again, especially on the men’s side, but I still think your best athletes in soccer are coming right out of high school as kids don’t care for Juco soccer that much. At least not your best ones with money.

• Your recruiting agencies are going to try to scam you out money by selling you on 6 years now. Are you sticking around for 6 years of college when most of it will come out of your pocket?

• Unlike Juco football 🏈 and Juco basketball 🏀, Juco Soccer is still a very tough sell for an American 🇺🇸 kid.

Relax everyone, it changes nothing really in our sport. Just the recruiting agency scammers are excited about this because they get to scam a kid by telling them to go the Juco route and you get 6 years now.
