⚽️Lady Vols Soccer Thread

Yanez was an outstanding keeper for Tennessee. She isn't as tall as most pro keepers--and I hope that doesn't keep her from getting on the roster of a major club soon--but her reactions are excellent and she is a very forceful presence when it comes to getting the defenders focused and organized properly. She is ambitious and has had a lot of high-level coaching, even before coming to Tennessee.

When Yanez was, maybe, a junior, Pensky recruited Ashley Orkus as another keeper for us---a top prospect. I believe she stayed for one year, during which time Pensky & staff also got a commitment from Lindsey Romig--another top prospect who played on a couple of Youth National Teams for the United States. I think because Orkus didn't want to sit on the bench behind Romig, after sitting behind Yanez for a year, she opted to transfer to Ole Miss. There she became the consensus best keeper in the SEC ---3rd team All America as a junior and 1st team AA last year. Let's just say out goalkeeping recruiting as been very good---and we've another good one arriving in July.

I actually had some reservations about Romig her first couple of years. I wasn't quite sure how good she was, and she sometimes seemed to make questionable decisions. I don't think she quite has Yanez's leadership qualities in net, and she also got dinged up a lot. But last year she seemed to become a truly dependable keeper--and made two of her best saves all year in the SEC title match against Arkansas. I think she still needs to show more in terms of leadership and getting the back four in sync--that job fell to French last year--but she continues to grow and is in position to have a strong senior season.

The spring-game photos above sparked a thought (I have many!). Of the three freshman who were so influential last year, I think the one who intrigued me the most was Jordan Fusco. While everyone was wowed all year by the talented Huff, and C. Rain was a revelation, I found myself wondering what made Fusco so effective as an attacking midfielder. She was a top prospect, with good height, athleticism and pace--but I wouldn't say that her athleticism and pace are exceptional. She wasn't a starter to start the year--but was one of our first subs--and yet from her first game, it was uncanny how much better we were after she entered the game, especially in attack. I don't know enough to explain why that was/is--but my sense is that she reads the game extremely well and knows how to find space on the field; her positioning almost always seems sound. Over the course of Pensky's tenure, I'm not sure we've had a certifiable attacking mid--and to be a truly good attacking team you need one. And now we have one.

One last note about Krikorian: While I knew he'd done incredibly well at FSU, I didn't know just how well. In his 17 years with the seminoles, his team made the Final Four (the College Cup) 11 times. That is amazing. The Noles made the Elite Eight 15 times in his 17 years. Damn. The good news for the rest of the teams in Div. 1 soccer is that there is almost no way his successor will do that well--logic and the math gods are against it. The new coach could win another natty this year, given the experienced talent on that team, but achieve what Krikorian did? Almost impossible!

Clemson will be a good test. It's a strong program (has been for years) that's just a smidge below the ACC Big Four of FSU, UNC, UVA and Duke. Clemson beat FSU a couple of years ago. They signed a good centerback prospect this year who had interest in Tennessee, but not sure how hard our coaches pursued her. We signed a couple of centerback prospects ourselves, but not sure they're as good as the one Clemson signed. One is tall and from Utah, but not sure if she's going to prove athletic enough for top SEC play. We'll see come July/August.

Tennessee 11th in Latest Directors’ Cup Standings
The Big Orange currently ranks third among SEC schools

2021-22 LEARFIELD Directors' Cup – Tennessee Scoring

FALL – 166 points
Soccer – 64 points
Volleyball – 50 points
Women's Cross Country – 27 points
Football – 25 points

WINTER – 381 points
Men's Indoor Track & Field – 85 points
Women's Swimming & Diving – 67.5 points
Women's Basketball – 64 points
Women's Indoor Track & Field – 58.5 points
Men's Swimming & Diving – 56 points
Men's Basketball – 50 points

Good work by the soccer squad. Some of those point totals are curious. The men's basketball team, for example, came in 2nd in the conference, then won the SEC tournament and went to the second round of the NCAA. The women's BB team came in 3rd in the conference, lost in the SEC tournament (quarters or semis, I don't recall) and went to the 3rd round of the NCAA (thanks mostly to having two games at home). Yet women's BB earned 14 more points than the men--I assume because they went one round farther in the NCAA. Alas, football, our Big Foot sport, bringing up the rear! I think 11tth may be one of our best Director's Cup rankings in quite a while.

Kirt, Morgan Earn Title Promotions

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee head soccer coach Brian Pensky announced two updates related to his staff on Thursday. Jonathan Morgan and Joe Kirt have both been promoted to associate head coaches.

"Joe and Jon have certainly earned these changes in title," said Pensky. "Our players look to them for as many answers and as much help as they do me. And in some cases, more. That's how successful programs are run on a day-to-day basis, and I feel very fortunate to have coaches of their caliber with me on the sideline."

Morgan and Kirt were both instrumental in helping guide UT to its second straight SEC Eastern Division Championship last fall. The Vols went on to defeat top-seeded Arkansas 3-0 in the final of the SEC Tournament, bringing the trophy home for the first time since 2008 before advancing in the NCAA Tournament to the Round of 16. With a record of 20-3-0, it was the winningest team in program history. Following the season, Tennessee's coaching staff was named Southeast Region Staff of the Year by United Soccer Coaches.

Kirt is the longest-tenured coach on the staff, having completed his 15th season at Tennessee and 10th as an assistant under Pensky in 2021. He has been a part of seven NCAA Tournament appearances and two SEC Tournament Championships during his time at UT.

Morgan has been coaching on Rocky Top for six seasons, having arrived in 2016 following a nine-year stint at the University of Maryland. He has been to four NCAA Tournaments with Tennessee and helped lead UT to its first-ever NCAA Quarterfinal in 2018.

Will the game be available to watch anywhere on the web or anything? I searched ESPN app with no luck.

Very interesting piece--some excellent public-records reporting--on how things went down with Krikorian and FSU. Bottom line: he doesn't like
or respect the current athletic director--sounds like there is some prior history between them--and decided to make excessive salary demands to overlook the AD issue and stay at FSU--demands that the school couldn't, or wouldn't, meet. He was already the highest paid coach in the game--getting double what most other successful coaches get. He'll be fine--will get his pick of jobs.

A glimpse into negotiations between FSU and Mark Krikorian before his resignation

Interesting read, curious to see how things go with their soccer program the next few years.
