I hope this year's class is a lot more memorable four years from now!!

I hope someone doesn't look back and say...

"Wow 5000 replies on the Jeff Luc thread, what a waste of time"

Or

"4000 replies on Da'Rick Rogers, what a waste of talent. Ala Nukeese"

Don't think that one will happen :crossfingers::crossfingers:

WOW! what did we have 6-7 guys out of 32 we signed who made any meaningful contribution. That is some major talent scouting there.

maybe i'm not as keen as all of you excellent talent evaluators, but I think the 2007 class panned out extremely well given the circumstances. A lot of them contributed at some point in their careers. It was the 2006 and 2008 class that struggled.

Class of 2007:

Anthony Anderson - will get meaningful minutes if not start at CB next year

Deshaun Barnes - did not contribute

Eric Berry - I think he did okay

William Brimfield - was a project from the beginning. maybe he can finally turn the corner

Todd Campbell - provided depth, but nothing more. Think he might have helped out on ST but not sure

BJ Coleman - would be our starting QB this upcoming year if he would've stayed. Can't blame a guy for leaving if he doesn't like the Coach though (maybe he's nostradomus?)

Kevin Cooper - 2 year starter at Fullback

Lennon Creer - Contributed on ST and played some good minutes. Again, can't really blame him for transferring

Chris Donald - either the biggest bust or the most overhyped player in recruiting history

Art Evans - Will end up being a 2 year starter at CB

C.J. Fleming - was challenging for the CB spot this time last year, will see meaningful minutes at either CB or definitely ST

Savion Frazier - will be a 2 year starter

Cory Hall - did not contribute

Josh Hawkins - provided depth, has not contributed

Gerald Jones - will be a 3 year starter

Donald Langley - left or got kicked off by Kiffin. Don't know the full story, but I think he made some bad decisions

Tyler Maples - provided depth, opted to leave for more playing time

Ben Martin - will end up being a 2 year starter at DE and provided depth for 4 years

Nevin McKenzie - played meaningful minutes in 2007 and started in 2008

Rolando Melancon - Really wish he would ahve come here. Didn't have grades, stayed in Louisiana

Denarious Moore - will be a 2 year starter at WR.

Kenny O'Neal - like most JUCO skill position players, was over-hyped

Ahmad Paige - just couldn't put on the weight

Cody Pope - Contributor on the OL

Dennis Rogan - Arguable contributed the most, besides Berry, in this class

Darris Sawtelle - Left when Kiffin came

Rae Sykes - will see meaningful minutes this year at DT

Daryl Vereen - was a 'tweener that has been able to secure a spot at RB, S, or LB. Has contributed on ST though

Brent Vinson - great freshman year, but had too many distractions. but still was a starter at one point in his career

Christ Walker - 2 year starter

Rufus Williams - don't think he ever made it in

DeAngelo Willingham - Started his Senior year and contributed a lot his Jr. year.

I say if we get this many players that contribute and eventually start in every recruiting class we'd be doing alright. Can't expect them all to pan out. Some aren't going to get in, others are going to fail out or get kicked out. But about half of this class started for the vols at one point or the other. In my opinion, this is not the class to knock on.

Just cause they started doesn't mean anything, the last 3 or 4 classes have been busts.

You can't say well MAYBE they'll contribute or turn the corner - its an evaluation as of today...I originally said 6-7..its more like 8 or so that had meaningful contributions but 6 or so that were/are stand outs. But in a class of 32 thats really only 25-30% success. TO compete at a top level in the SEC you need 75% or better success rate among top players you bring in. Yeah there will always be busts, but you need more hits than misses....and that's just for 2007...look at 05, 06, 08...its scary

I was looking at the 2008 class and I was thinking WTF? That was a super bad class holy crap.

Yeah 2008...where did that class rank nationally? 35th and good for 8th best in the SEC? WOW

BLUE = No Longer at UT

DE Steven Fowlkes
OT Dallas Thomas
LB E.J. Abrams-Ward
QB Casey Kelly

DT Montori Hughes
DE Willie Bohannon
CB Prentiss Waggner
S Stephaun Raines
LB Gerald Williams
LB Herman Lathers

WR Rodriguez Wilks
OT Preston Bailey
FB Ben Bartholomew
OG Carson Anderson
RB Tauren Poole
LB Austin Johnson
TE Aaron Douglas

But you know what, looking at it, there might be as many contributors from this class as the 2007 class

Problem again is you cant string all these poor classes in a row like that and expect to be great

2006 class - 23rd ranked wasn't much better

UL = still here, but not doing much
BLUE = No Longer at UT

Chad Cunningham
Dorian Davis
Walter Fisher
Blake Garretson
Justin Garrett
Quintin Hancock
Ramone Johnson
Daniel Lincoln
Dustin Lindsey
Jacques McClendon
Darius Myers
Chase Nelson
Cody Pope

Jarrod Shaw
Lee Smith
Nick Stephens
Luke Stocker
Victor Thomas
LaMarcus Thompson
Brent Vinson
Gerald Williams

and I'm not going to post it, but look at that #1 rated class (SCOUT). we had a bout 8-9 players that were consistent starter, a handful of names you see in later classes because they had to go the prep/JUCO route and a few that were booted.

Still around 30% good recruits....maybe thats good...idk

seems to me though that you need a better rate of success at identifying talent than that to succeed year in year out in the SEC. Then look and see that Fulmer was averaging only 1 out of every 3-4 recruits ever really made meaningful contributions over the past 4 or more years and you see why UT is where its at today talent wise

We might also half to go the juco route for defensive tackles. We look to be thin at that position for next year./QUOTE]

Sounds like we were in need of DT 3 years ago.

If all classes perform like this one, we continue to hope for 6-6. This is aweful. Maybe four or five leave or never contribute, but this is aweful. It's the difference between good evaluation and coaching and bad. One of the things saban does well is evaluate. His guys don't miss. Two star, three star, four star, they contribute. And hitting on four or five more guys a year is the difference between having a thin roster and a legitimate sec two deep roster.

Tauren Poole is still at UT unless I missed something..... and if you really think you are going to find any single recruiting class where 75% of the players contributed then you are crazy, especially since you seem to not include Special Teams play as contribution.... Just not gonna find it... You hope that 50% of your class ends up having significant contributions.

Sorry that was my bad with Poole - he is obviously still on the team...must have got color coding happy

I think you're right though that about 50% should make significant contributions. Today I looked over Bama, UF, USC, and couple other schools classes over the past 4-5 years and you get about 30-40% of the guys who start and then contributions from about 50-60%. Apparently there are more who provide depth and ride pine than I expected. But where I did notice the bigger difference was in the rate of attrition and non-contributors. It seems like those other schools had few kids dismissed, drop out, etc and fewer still that did just take a spot on the roster. Seems like more of their guys contribute more often, not in a significant way, but in spelling the first string guys and allowing the team to perform with little to no fall off at that position.

After doing some more research, I think its guys on those levels, guys who may be good enough to start at lesser programs but are #2 & 3 guys here that we really miss on

The funniest part about that thread is that people were Myspace stalking back then.

I agree with your assessment that they have fewer guys dismissed, dropped out, etc. But, again, keep in mind that UT football has now seen 3 different Head Coaches since then, and 13 current players were either dismissed or quit once Kiffin came in... That definitely inflates our numbers of players that are no longer on our roster.
