Chatham (Va.) Hargrave four-star safety Jonathan Meeks has almost 10 scholarship offers to his credit, including one from Ron Cooper and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

"North Carolina, NC State, South Carolina, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Florida, Kansas and Penn State have offered me," the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Meeks said. "I've taken an official visit to North Carolina, and I went to South Carolina's game with LSU. I'm going to be setting up the rest of my official visits soon, but I'm not sure which schools I'm going to visit yet."

Meeks, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds, enjoyed his time in Columbia.

"That's like home to me since I'm from South Carolina," the Rock Hill native said. "It's a good school, and they have one of the top defenses in the country. I'm friends with Stephon Gilmore, and he was telling me I ought to come down there with him. He wasn't pressuring me or anything, but he said he'd love to play together."

Meeks, who bench presses 315 pounds, also talked with his potential position coach while in town.

"I was talking to coach Cooper, and he was telling me he liked my game and wants me to go there," he said. "He seems like a good coach and has put a lot of guys into the NFL."

Meeks also liked what he saw in Chapel Hill.

"North Carolina is a team on the rise, so it could be good timing for me to go there," he said. "Coach (Butch) Davis is a great coach and he has great coaches around him. I liked it there a lot."

Meeks knows what he's looking for in a school.

"I'm looking for a good school from an academic standpoint first of all," he said. "I want come into a situation where I can get some early playing time if I'm ready. The other things are just having good people around me and playing in a defensive scheme that fits my skills."

Meeks, who projects to fulfill his academic obligations at Hargrave next month, knows he has to make his decision in the near future.

"Our last game is this week, so I'm going to set the rest of my official visits after that," he said. "I'll pick my school sometime in December."

Meeks had a good visit to NC State."It went well, it was a good visit," he stated. "I got there Friday night and I went to a team meeting. Then on Saturday I hung out with some of the players including my hosts Jevon Walker and Terrell Manning. We went out after the game too.

"It was cool hanging out with those guys. They showed me everything and taught me everything they know about the school. They told me how they have a chance to be real good in the future because they have a whole lot of good freshmen, plus Coach O'Brien is a good coach."

The No. 18 prep school prospect took in the Wake Forest game as well.

"It was a great game, they beat Wake Forest, so that was good," he said. "The safeties played real well. I like how they move the safeties around. They don't have a lot of depth there either. There is a chance for me to come in and play. The defensive coaches are great too."

Before heading out, Meeks met with head coach Tom O'Brien.

"It was good talking to him," he said. "He talked to me about my role and how I fit in at NC State and the future of the team. He also told me about his military stuff since I was at Hargrave, that was good."

What is next for Meeks?

"I'm probably going to take a visit to Tennessee next," he said. "I'm still looking at taking all five officials.

"I just added Penn State and Kansas offers in the past two or three weeks. I'm excited about them, they are big offers."

The prep prospect recently finished up the season with a 9-1 mark.

"I loved it at Hargrave," he said. "I got to play with a lot of great guys I'd never meet from Oregon and Texas. I think I learned a lot."

Meeks plans to enroll wherever he decides in January.
