Ron Paul's plan to fight terror would've kept our troops home. He wanted to issue a letter of marque and reprisal. A bounty on the heads of Al Qaeda members. Instead of spending $ trillions and risking American lives, you offer $1 billion for the head of Bin Laden.

To me this seems extremely practical. Why didn't/wouldn't we do it? Thoughts?

There was a bounty on his head and there are bounties on many others as well.

Because saying $25 million in the caveman realm of the ME is like saying 10 google. It's just so large as to be beyond grasp for most there. The number we had was gargantuan in that neck of the woods and it still didnt matter.

So it was $25 Million? I never even heard of it.

Yeah maybe $25 million (or any amount) wasn't going to get Osama's people to turn on him, but I think $1 billion is enough to get every bounty hunter in the world teaming up to go after him.

Yeah so they could all get killed. Way to much faith in bounty hunters.

25 million is a pile for the bounty hunter lot.

$1B might have been enough to induce a top AQ LT to kill him; thus, we would have provided a $1B subsidy to AQ.

Wouldn't be the first time we helped them. Ron Paul's plan included all AQ involved in 9/11. I picture them getting into an AK shootout in some cave, Reservoir Dogs style. Last man standing gets $1 billion and some plastic surgery.

bin laden was pretty stinking rich, but he started a terrorist organization. Giving a top lieutenant a billion dollars and a facelift isn't going to change the fact that you've still given a lot of money to a terrorist.

Let's say we offered a billion for his head. So some Western A-teamesque or Blackwater mercenary group gets together and heads out to find him. Let's say they carve a bloody swath across the ME, in the name of this bounty. Civilians killed in multiple countries, all in the name of US dollars, and completely out of the realm of official US business.

I fail to see the improvement. Seems like it is just relinquishing all control over the situation. Incredibly irresponsible.

Sounds like what actually happened, but it was US government official capacity.
