Woods just finished his sophmore season on the Serra Cavalier football team, yet he is gaining recognition as one of the southland's best football players. The 6'0, 173 lbs Woods helped the Cavaliers finish with a 10 - 2 record and led the team in receptions (43 rec. for 801 yards, 18+ yards per catch) on offense, and he led the team with (8) interceptions from his free safety position on defense.

Cavalier coach Scott Altenberg expects more of the same from Woods, and (14) other returning starters next season. "Robert was the MVP of our team as a sophmore. That hasn't happened in my ten plus years of coaching. He just made big plays whenever we needed them, and I just expect him to get better and better. With all of our returning starters, expectations for our team will be high in 2008, but I think with playmakers like Woods and others, we'll be fine."

Coach Altenberg is not the only one who has high expectations. Woods expects to do even more for his team going forward. " I played pretty well last season, but I really want to be even more of an impact player next year." That shouldn't be a problem for a player who has runs the forty yard dash in the 4.5 range. And although that speed comes in handy for Woods when playing the last line of defense at free safety, Woods considers himself a "speed" wide receiver who also has good hands, quickness and reaction time.

As for recruiting, interest in Woods is picking up steam. According to Coach Altenberg, all of the Pac 10 teams have made contact about Woods, with Colorado and Arizona State showing serious interest with verbal scholarship offers. Woods' profile will rise even more as high school football camps continue over the next few months. A recent winner of the Overall MVP Award at the Schuman National Underclassmen Combine, Woods says he's looking forward to participating in more football camps this year. " I intend on going to the USC camp this summer," says Woods. " I enjoy going to them because they are fun and competitive."

A good student, Woods reports a 3.4 GPA and really enjoys math. Those math skills will probably come in handy as Woods will be busy over the next year adding up scholarship offers. And although Woods doesn't have an early favorite, playing football for a program in the West is appealling to him. " I really like a lot of the football teams on the West Coast. I like watching their style of play. "

Scouting Report: The best wideout in Southern California as a junior. Outstanding two-way player with great COD ability. Very smooth on the field, does everything in one motion. Creates seperation with outstanding acceleration and angles. Great natural awareness and body control, Woods finishes plays better than any receiver in this class. Will need to add 10-15 pounds of muscle before playing. Will have an immediate impact in college, but doesn't have the elite upside of a Julio Jones or A.J. Green. Plays across someone who does in future five-star sophomore George Farmer. Woods could also be a pretty good free safety in college because of his instincts and ball skills, but will almost certainly play wideout. Exudes a confidence and swagger on the field that a lot of high-profile kids don't.

There won't be too many prospects better anywhere in the country from the class of 2010 than Serra (Gardena, Calif.) athlete Robert Woods.

Woods could be the state's best player at two positions next year. Whether he's playing wide receiver or cornerback, he's a tremendous talent and an instant impact player at the college level.

"Everyone is offering him now," Serra coach Scott Altenberg said. "Pretty much everyone in the Pac 10 has offered and now we're hearing from schools in the SEC and Big 12 as well.

"I haven't even finished making his tape yet but schools are seeing something in order to offer. He made so many plays last year his highlight tape could be three hours long if we put them all on there."

According to Altenberg, Woods is currently favoring staying close to home.

"He likes USC, UCLA, Cal and Stanford a lot right now," Altenberg said. "All four have offered and although I think he's open to leaving, those are the four he mentions a lot.

"USC and UCLA are the local schools right in his backyard, Cal is a school he has always liked, even before high school and Stanford has such great academics. He's not going to make an early commitment anywhere though, he's going to take his visits and take his time with the whole process."

Woods has offers from just about every school out West and picked up two more in the last few days from Oklahoma and Tennessee.

"Things are going good now but Robert has kind of shut down his recruitment for the time being," Woods father Robert Sr. said. "He's really focusing on track and will be leaving for New York shortly with his track team.

"Once track is over, he'll turn his focus back to football. It's a fun time for him though and we're all excited to see how it all plays out."

Woods will attend the NIKE Camp at USC in April and on his questionnaire form, listed Cal as his top choice followed by UCLA, LSU, USC and Florida. Are the Bears really at the top of his board right now?

"Honestly, Robert doesn't have a leader or really a strong group of favorites, he's open to everyone," Robert Sr. said. "He'll go through the process and see what everyone has to say and he genuinely gets
