Takoby Cofield - Football Recruiting

Scout.com: Takoby Cofield Profile

"Everything is going really good," Cofield said. "Coach Reaves came and evaluated me this week. I know they have some needs on the offensive line. Other schools like North Carolina, Clemson, Penn State and Virginia Tech have all expressed interest and stopped by too."

"They are very good every year," Cofield said. "They are a prestigious university and that would be a great degree from Tennessee. Coach Kiffin put together a great staff and his NFL background is impressive. Bringing in his dad was also big time. They are all about success and that's what they are known for."

New story up on VQ... He has yet to recieve a UT offer...

Kiffins system is about Zone blocking, which means lineman will have to get to the next level. Plus I have a friend who is getting looked at by UT, they told him no one over 290 lbs and must run under a 5.0 40. They want fast and strong lineman. Thats one reason I think Kevin Revis will thrive in this system. Watchin his tapes, he can move and he is also a year younger then everyone else so he will grow somemore.

Yes, I'm plenty familiar with the blocking scheme this year.

I don't know who told your friend that, but we are recruiting plenty of linemen that run +5 second 40's.

Sorry, I just don't believe that. Half of our offer list is guys with +5 second 40 times. It's not about straight ahead quickness as much as it is flexibility, sound footwork, and athletic ability.

Scout has him listed as running a 5.9 and Rivals has him as a 5.4. So, he must be working alot on his speed. But I agree Sab, 40 times are not a huge deal with OL. Honestly, it seems like it's really hard to find OL who run under a 5.0...

Not only is he slow, slow, but he can't bench his weight. That's a problem. Leg strength relative to weight seems a problem too.

Right. Add all that together and I'm not sure how much athletic ability he really has. Maybe he has a good tape, I don't know. But it seems like the only thing he has going for him is his size, and that alone won't cut it in the SEC.

Looks like he plays really high too just by taking a quick glance. They may get him in camp to see how flexible he really is and to just get a better look at him though. I doubt he gets an offer though.

Also, he pretty much gets worked in his 1 v 1 video.

The Kareem Martin guy looks like a pretty good DE prospect if he could put on a little bit of weight.

Too bad this kid wasn't adopted by Jeff Jacoby on the sports animal. Then his name would have been Tacoby Jacoby. This kid could make a good project player.

How far down the field do you think the OL have to go to block a defender at the '2nd level' on any particular play? 40 yards? If one guy runs a 5.5 40 yard dash and another guy runs a 5.0 40 yard dash, how much difference do you think that makes when they have to run 5 yards to get to the guy they block? Basically none. Quickness, lateral movement, and explosiveness in short bursts are much, much more important for an OL. Even in a zone scheme. 40 yard dash times for OL is about like evaluating a LB based on how far he can throw a football.

This is spot on.

I'm copy/pasting this every time someone brings up a linemans 40 time.

Recently Cofield spoke with Penn State and is hoping that they will offer along with Alabama, and Tennessee. With only a few visits to a trio of instate schools in the books, Cofield hopes to use this summer to visit all of the schools that are recruiting him.

“I’ve visited North Carolina, East Carolina, and Duke so far,” he said. “I’m going to visit a lot of schools this summer like Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and South Carolina. Just about every school that’s recruiting me on the east coast, I’m going to try and visit this summer. I’m definitely going to try and visit Virginia and Virginia Tech though.”

When he visits each school this summer, there are a couple of things that he is looking for. While he’s not in any rush to make a decision, he’s confident that after the summer he will be ready to announce his choice during Tarboro’s first football contest of the season.

“The biggest thing for me is academics,” said Cofield. “After academics, the next biggest thing is coaching. I want to play for a coaching staff that can maximize my potential and for a program that has a winning tradition. After I take all of my visits this summer and if I have the same offers, I’ll be announcing my decision on August 14th the night of our Jamboree.”
