Roland Johnson - Yahoo! Sports

Scout.com: Roland Johnson Profile

Roland Johnson could be one of the state's real sleeper prospects. Johnson is an undersized but active defensive lineman. Johnson doesn't just compete with Willis and Miller, he often outplays them, evidenced by his three straight DL of the week awards.

Though he is undersized at 6-foot, Johnson is explosive and powerful and plays with a great motor. He was one of the top performers at the Tennessee lineman showcase camp right alongside his two teammates. Not surprisingly, Tennessee is also the school that seems closest to offering the standout, an offer that would certainly interest him after his experience this summer.

"They just have a great campus," Johnson said of the Vols. "The coaches are great there. Mr. Monte Kiffin is real smart and taught me some great technique when I went to camp there. Coach Orgeron has a lot of enthusiasm and he'll come get you amped up. I love that. They are very serious there."

Per Rivals... This guy is a 3star, and it appears we have some interest. He plays at Byrnes on the DL with Miller and Willis. I'm not entirely sure what we are recruiting him for, it appears he can play a number of positions. Rivals has him listed as a SDE and Scout has him as a DT/MLB...

He does not hold a UT offer...

DE Roland Johnson
6-0/230, Camden (S.C.) High
Johnson is a similar type of defender as Tennessee commit J.C. Copeland. He has a strong, stocky build and he sets himself apart with his high motor and intensity. Johnson has a brutal club and has a natural spin move off of it. With some added weight, Johnson has the versatility to cross-train inside and off of the edge in certain situations. More than anything, you have to love his full-speed nature and competitive attitude.

Per Rivals... He was a member of the Hot 11 at UTs lineman camp...

2008: One of the better run stoppers in the state. During the ’08 season Johnson recorded 150 tackles (95 solo / 55 assisted), 26 TFL, and 6 sacks. This young man without question should be one of the better prospects to come from out of the 2010 recruiting class…

Will we take another D lineman?

Yes, for sure imo, maybe 2. Broussard isn't gonna make it in. Things are iffy for Harris, and it is no guarantee that Brown will make it in...

I'm not saying it will be this guy, but I think we have to get a freshman at DT who will be on campus in the fall...

This kid may be great but to me he doesn't pass the eyeball test as a DE. His measurables are also not as good as others we've already offered. 4.96 in the 40 is way too slow for LB in Monte's scheme. We already have one short DE in Copeland at 6'-2". Those guys have got to get their hands up to be effective.

Reason he gets so many awards is b/c Miller and Willis are probably goin to get most of the attention leaving him w/ one on one oppertunities.

Both Willis and Miller looked good, but the D tackle that said he was close to getting an offer was a beast. Very fast, very physical and with some time in a sec s&c program he would be a stud IMO. Needs an offer now!

A guy on VQ went to watch Byrnes tonight. This is what he said about Johnson...

Im not so sure I want him. That dline is not fair at the HS level, but Ill leave that up to the coaches.

“I feel like he is under the radar,” Corey Miller said. “His size is what people talk about, not being tall enough, but I really don’t see that it’s a problem. He works hard, is strong as all get out, and the kid’s a monster in my eyes. I feel there should be more attention toward him.”

Listed at 6-feet, 244 pounds, Johnson is all chiseled muscle and has to be one of the fastest nose guards anywhere.

he looks like he could be a real project. Seems to have the desire to play. Our coaches may be waiting to see how things turn out with other guys higher on our list and figure this guy will be in our back pocket if we need him.
