Tyler Stephenson - Football Recruiting

cPanel®

"I just received an offer from Tennessee," Stephenson said on Friday. "I'm really interested because they have produced a lot of DBs and they have really great coaches."

With the new offer, the Volunteers jumped several schools to find the top of Stephenson's list.

"It has to put them up there at the top," he said. "I'd say probably in the top three."

Plans to attend our camp this summer.

"I know a little bit about Tennessee because one of my coaches, he knows Coach Garza real well," he said. "So I know about the program form him."

Stephenson has had a chance to speak on the phone to head coach Lane Kiffin, defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and defensive backs coach Willie Mack Garza.

"It was real good because they were letting me know about the history they have and about how they put up a lot of great defensive backs," he said. "They were telling me about the recruiting class last year and how they had one of the best classes in the country."

Wow, Garza has pull! Sounds like we're in great shape with his talented young man. Even though our Secondary is stacked, it couldn't hurt to have 4*s waiting in the wings.

"Right now I would have to say it would be Oklahoma State, Tennessee, and probably Kansas right about now. At this moment I wouldn't say I have a favorite school because there are still a lot of things I have to look at as far as getting down to the schools and stuff like that so I wouldn't say I have a favorite at this point."

"Probably the biggest factors will be the school, a good relationship with the coaches, and I would just have to talk it over with my mom but I know as far as going away and leaving the state of Texas, that wouldn't be a problem at all. The only other thing that I would probably have a question about is if I come would be able to run track also."

"I'll probably wait until after the season or sometime next year like in January or around signing day."

How tall are our corners now? 5'10 is not far off the standard height for a college CB is it?

5'10 is a little below average I"d say. It seems like a lot of corners are around 5'11 to 6 foot.

If he wants to run track though, he better be good. Doesn't UT have one of the better track teams in the country?

yeah, but Lane said he doesnt care about the size like this. a inch is barely anything.

Vols with the edge
Hayes' teammate, cornerback Tyler Stephenson, says that Tennessee is his current leader.

"They have a good defensive program and they have a history of putting defensive backs in the league," he said.

Utah, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Kansas, Minnesota, Arizona State and Tulsa also have offered Stephenson.

"I want to look outside of Texas as well. Mostly just want to find a place that I can relate to while I'm in college." I plan on taking all my visits before I decide," said Stephenson. "I'm narrowing them down by looking at the coaches, the way they play, the academics and then taking all the visits. I'd say sometime when the school's out I'll start thinking about taking trips."

Per Rivals... Says he wants to run track in college as well...

"They actually have," he said of TCU moving up his list. "Like I said earlier what I wanted to do is build a relationship with people. Just by having a good relationship with Coach Jennings, that put TCU up there. Oregon, Baylor, Tennessee and LSU are my other favorites."

With Robert Griffin quarterbacking Baylor, they will get to some bowl games.

The #2, #3 and #6 overall prospects at Rivals.com are from Texas and all three remain uncommitted.

I wouldn't call Lache Seastrunk, Darius White or Jackson Jeffcoat "lleftovers." There were over 400 prospects in Texas in the 2009 class that inked with FBS schools. With Texas' early 2010 class standing at 21 pledges, that leaves approximately 380 for the rest of us.

You need to do less texting and more research.

We are not on the list for Darius White, and we haven't even offered.

Same is true for Jeffcoat.

Out of your list of great players left in TX. Well we have not offered 2 out of the 3. Why post names that our staff is not interested in or who have no interest in us? Throwing out names of Texas kids on a Rivals top 10 list is not what I call research especially when these kids have no application to the real UTs recruiting interest.

380 seems like and impressive number. However out of those, how many do you think are actually elite players that we are interested in? How many of those are the bodies just to fill a roster?

To revisit this---

UT light is finished recruiting giving us some of the Texas lleftovers

Texas is not finished recruiting and they are not sharing "lleftovers." Their state is loaded with hundreds of kids that will sign with FBS programs.

We are not on the list for Darius White, and we haven't even offered.

Same is true for Jeffcoat.

Hubbs confirmed that we had offered White and Seastrunk, but there doesn't appear to be much public interest there. I know nothing about any contact with Jeffcoat. It doesn't mean contact wasn't made.

Getting off the Rivals top-10, we are still in pursuit of some linemen, Hurd, Rodgers and LB Corey Nelson.

The point is that Texas turned out more signees than any other state last year and as a result, the Longhorns will have several misses every year. Mack Brown has missed out on some of their in-state targets and to say that whomever Tennessee gets is a "lleftover" makes you sound like one of those homers, that says if the home state school doesn't get someone that he wasn't any good in the first place.
