After the Last Corps Trip
Kathryn Holmes Smith

And the colonel of the Cadet Corps said,
As he stiffly took his stand,
"It's just another Corps Trip, boys
We'll march in behind the band."

Then heaven's pearly portals opened,
Hosts of Angels showed the way,
For that Fighting Texas Aggie group
On that final Judgment Day.

When more Aggies came in view.
Twelve dressed in Bonfire gear
Walking arm and arm, and singing
Of the School they hold so dear.

Twelve Aggie voices said "Howdy"
To the keepers of the Gate.
"Working hard we just lost track of time,
We hope we're not too late."

"It's the Fighting Aggie Bonfire Crew,"
St. Peter said, "Behold."
They're ready to light up Heaven,
With their courage and faith so bold".

"I would often watch them building,
That Stack so large and high,
And surely knew the time would come
They would build it in the sky."

And so the twelve came through the Gates,
St. Peter said, "Don't fear,
You are just in time for Roll Call"
One by one, they answered. . . "Here.'

Yes. Off Campus Student Bon Fire. I have mixed emotions about it, but they continue.

As long as it is conducted in a safe manner I'm alright with it. Still wish we had the beer barrel game with KY.

It's far more than just an issue of safety. It's hard to explain.

This is eerily similar to the ceremonies held for the School of the Americas victims.

Each year they go down to Ft. Benning. After they list each victims names they say "Presente" And the protest is this Saturday as well. I wonder if they use the same poem/song?

I went to middle school with Tim Kerlee here in Memphis. He was a grade younger than us, but was fast-tracked into our algebra class because he was so smart.

He also had a lot of personality...this is random, but I remember he used to hold his ears out and puff his cheeks up...and he'd look just like the guy from Mad Magazine. I guess that was his way of making friends with a class full of kids older than he was.

Couldn't believe the news that day. He'd probably be running a Fortune 500 company...he was that gifted. Very sad.

I didn't know Jerry Self, but I went to his wake. It was an easy decision...I was living in Ft. Worth...and the wake/burial was in Arlington.

There must have been a hundred young men from the Corps of Cadets there.

After I paid my respects I left and was walking to my car when I saw a man outside whom I knew had to have been his father. Turns out it was. The pain that man felt was unbearable. I just pray that time has healed that man.

I remember that I was in HS back then, it was very sad. I'm glad y'all can still carry on the tradition safely.
