11-2: the football team & men's basketball team record

January 2, 1997 is the only other time Tennessee's football team has been 11-2.

On December 30, the basketball team went to 10-0 with a win over Southern Cal.
Their next game was against Florida on January 3, which they lost to go to 10-1. The basketVols lost the next two games and didn't get their next win until January 17, which put their record at 11-3.

So no -- never before has Tennessee football and basketball (men's) shared an 11-2 record.

I'll leave it to someone else to search the Lady Vols record in 1997-98.

So wait...when the basketball team lost its 2nd game, they would have dropped to 11-2, right? And that would have been following the season, so the football team was 11-2 at the same time, right?

Also, you said, "January 2, 1997 is the only other time Tennessee's football team has been 11-2." Didn't the 2001 team finish 11-2?

I think the sequence for the b-ball team that year was actually: 10-1 ... then 10-2 ... then 10-3 ... then 11-3. So they never quite got to 11-2 to match that season's football record.

You're right about 2001. How'd I miss that? Our Citrus Bowl win came on Jan 2, I believe.

The basketball team was already 13-1 on Dec. 30, and won again on Jan 6 to go to 14-1.

I did find a similar outcome, though not exactly 11-2:

On the 2nd of January 2003, our football team ended the season 10-3 after a loss to (get this) Clemson in the Peach Bowl.

Two weeks later, our lads on the basketball squad beat South Carolina, raising their record to...10-3.

Similar, yeah?

Go Vols!

We will likely stay 6th in the final CFP rankings, does a 11-2 record get the 🏀 Vols a 6th spot in next AP?

I think the 1997-1998 Lady Vols finished 39-0.
