Defensive End
Gastonia, NC
Forestview High
HT: 6'5
WT: 235
40: 4.82
VT: 30.7"

Will be visiting for the UAB game, does not have a UT offer at this point but we are in the early stages of recruiting him.

"DE Catrell Boyd is a virtual unknown on the recruiting trail, but he certainly helped his cause in Charlotte. He was one of the top sleepers on hand, at 6'4 222lbs he ran a 4.82-40 yard dash & logged a 30.7 vertical. Boyds frame suggest he could add a quite a bit of weight while his long arms are exactly what you look for in a DE." -Scout.com

Offer him............. He looks like some raw talent that needs to be coached up.

A quick Google search told me he is a pretty good basketball player. Looks like a good athlete.

I wonder if he gets an offer?

Thanks for adding this thread. I am currently a law student at UT and I've been good friends with Catrell since he was in 5th grade (he's my brother's best friend and a very food friend of the family). Catrell has played basketball all of his life and concentrated on basketball his first 3 years in high school, so this is his first year playing football since middle school.

That said, Catrell is simply a ridiculous athlete. He is a legitimate 6'5'', 235 lbs., and can jump as well as anyone I have every seen (for his size). For proof of this, check out this basketball highlight video my brother put together for him: YouTube - Catrell Boyd - Power & Athleticism . He averaged 10 pts. and 10 rebounds last year in basketball, but football is definitely where his future is.

Catrell's 4.82 40-yard dash (referenced above) was actually the first time he had ever run the 40 in his life. He has since improved his technique and gotten down to around a 4.7.

Although I haven't been able to attend many of his games, from what I have heard, he has put up some pretty impressive numbers so far. He is definitely raw, but I think he would easily be a 4-star if this wasn't his first year playing.

He has already received early interest from UT, UGA, Clemson, South Carolina, ECU, and NC State. He is very interested in UT (like many other western North Carolinians), and I think he would probably jump at a UT offer.

If ya'll have any questions about him, let me know.

Since you're currently a UT student maybe you should cut all contact with him if we're recruiting him...might look bad to the NCAAA...kidding, seems that bad sometimes though...good luck with the law degree and hope he's as good as you think, and, if he is, we get him b/c "family ties" and being from Western NC means he might truly bleed orange if he comes here..thanks for the input

Tell me about it. I went to UNC undergrad, so right now, I know better than most. I really hope Catrell gets a chance at UT though. There isn't anything like playing in Neyland.

I thought I saw a recruit with a "Boyd" name tag this past weekend at th game. But I was struggling to read some of the name tags.

He's received interest from NC State, UGA, ECU, Clemson, and now UT. I really don't think many schools know about him though, he's only played 4 games.

He wasn't here last week, but he will be here this week.

I think that's a possibility. He has the strongest legs that I have ever seen. I think he projects best as a DE though, just because of his height, but who knows.

Considering how quickly Smith and Miller blew up in Wylie's training program, I would suspect Boyd could easily add 25-30 lbs. to his frame in short order.

I am kind of getting in late on this guy. He looks pretty stout in his picture and seems to have good measurables. Is he legit and if so does anybody think he might be a take considering we do not land our first or second options at D Line?

I see it as a possible option if we can't get Pagan, Drew or Tuitt.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is Catrell's first year playing football, so he is about as legit as anyone with 4-5 games under their belt can be. He is an incredible athlete and has averaged 10 tackles and 1-2 sacks per game so far this year. I really think that if he would have played in the past, he would easily be a 4-star right now.

If I hear anything else, I'll let you know.

The kid is obviously a raw talent, but the measurables are excellent, and he has shown on the basketball court that he has the athletic ability.

"X" mentioned him today, and apparently he is very impressed with the kid and likes our chances for him.
