College Football Playoff Announces 2024 and 2025 Game Dates - College Football Playoff

The field of 12 teams will be comprised of the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked other teams. The ranking of the teams will continue to be done by a selection committee whose size, composition, and method of selection will remain substantially unchanged from the current arrangement. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution.

By 2026, some mid-tier bowl people will get together and make a cash grab pitch to the CFP and those 1st round games will be 'bowl games' as well.

I hear a lot of people talking about they want Tennessee to host a 1st round game...
I hope Tennessee never plays a 1st round game because of the bye !!!

I’ll tell you one thing - winning the Conf is even more important now -

With the previous format you could not win your division, skip the SECCG (assuming you don’t lose in Columbia SC to a nobody) and show up for the four game playoff relatively healthy.
Now in order to do that you gotta get a bye -
The worst spot to be in is to make the champ game and lose it. You still have to play the Conf champ game AND the first round. It seems better to finish third in SEC than second. - least amount of games that way.

So, Clemson and Utah would've been 1st round byes this past year? I'm not sure I entirely agree with the weight on conference champions, given there will only be like 2 good conferences next year.

Going to lose ACC as a conference and probably one more and will end up with P4

Eight teams is ok by me.

Stepping blocks.

Final four will be all SEC either way.

Teams 1-4 are the highest ranked conf champs.
Teams 5-12 are seeded in order of
Highest ranked. 2 of those 8 teams will be the next two highest ranked conference champs but they could theoretically be seeds 11 and 12 if they are lowest ranked in CFP poll. The other 6 are at larges and just top 6 ranked in poll who aren’t conference champs.

Would not want to watch a playoff game in late December in Ohio, Penn, Indiana….
Well I guess we better win then. Your comment crushes everyone’s idea that the 12 team CFP devalues the regular season. In fact it makes it that much more important. Nobody wants to go to Ann Arbor ever really, but especially in mid to late December. Let’s just hope that the Quartfinals also get put in on campus stadiums after the first 2 seasons.

For 8-team version

round of eight can be Sugar, Orange, Rose, whatever game

then just add two more games

Dude. That's a good point. But Big10 has been whining @ the southern bowl arrangement for a long time. This may answer that and could become an advantage for those northern home teams. I'm not against seeing some old school slopfest in 35° rain/sleet/mud in Ann Arbor or Happy Valley etc. 🌨️ Would potentially be a nice regional advantage and be a throwback to some old school knock down dragout football in the trenches with a 13-9 final score.
A lot of this has been lost to our plastic fields, palm tree venues and dome stadiums. 🌴

Could play in northern domes like the Indy Colts field, Vikings, etc.

If we want to lose all our hub caps, might even try Detroit.
