With one game remaining in the 2022 regular season, Tennessee is ranked 130 out of 131 in passing defense.

This compares to the following years:

2021: 122
2020: 106
2019: 16
2018: 60

Comparing Pruitt to heupel defenses aren’t fair. He run the hurry up, we lead most of the time, and are generally strong vs the run. Plus Pruitt is a defensive minded coach.

Before 2020, opponents only needed about 20 points for a victory and then run out the clock. Now they need to score lots and are usually playing from behind. Everything’s gonna be ok next week when we smash Vandy’s glimmer of hope after beating overrated Kentucky and Florida teams.

Bleh, I dont like to compare anything to that clown coach. If you look at Offense stats, they are opposite.

I wanted to observe that it appears whatever UT is doing at pass defense isn’t working. Im sure they know that, but somehow I feel smart for posting it here :)

I am not sure what this defense needs but if my memory servers me I do not remember Volnation liking Martinez the last time he was here.

The good news? Vandy is 129th :)

It really is amazing that we have won this many games based on a terrible defense.

All season long the defense, as bad as it is, made a few plays here and there to help win games. Last night looked like Purdue. It seemed like they threw in the towel

Most didn’t care for him neither. He was let go at GA and then TN came calling.

Honest question- Why is it always our defense is exhausted due to the speed our O plays? How come the Offense is never exhausted? Same goes for any team we play. I always hear about how our speed of plays wears down defenders but no one every asks how does the offense stay fresh?

A quick 3 and out by our offense puts pressure on our defense with little time to plan adjustments or rest.

Our offensive strategy it to keep the personnel we want them to have on the field with our pace. We use formation to pick on a particular DB with different receivers from play to play. Keep running a DB deep with 4 while 11 is on the other side running short routes, then match up 11 with the other DB that 4 has been taking deep. Now a tired DB is covering a rested 11.

A sampling of teams ranked ahead of us at pass defense: Charlotte, Kent State, MTSU.

It’s true we have a talent problem (all corners and no safeties) but the defensive backfield is really underachieving, and it is time to think about making some coaching changes on that side of the ball.

Don't over look that Rattler could have gotten a manicure waiting on receivers to open combined with some extra accuracy mojo.

Rodney Garner and the defensive lines run stopping ability have covered up a lot of stink this year.
Yep and now teams know the path to victory. Don't beat your heads against the proverbial wall trying to run the ball. No, you take advantage of our woeful DBs. They simply do not have the athletes to guard anyone. You take the top off early and often. When they go into their shell and play 10-15 yards off the ball, you sit down in the openings and take your 7 yard throws down the field. I've seen some bad DBs over the decades, but I can't recall having so many of them on one team. We literally don't have a single guy who's what I'd consider a solid SEC DB.

The only real question remaining is
what needs to be done and what will be done to remedy this going forward? Absolutely for certain have to bring in more talented players on that side of the ball, do we need to change coaching and coaching philosophy there too as it appears? We’ll soon see I guess.
