'14 AL LB Gavin Bryant (UT Signee 2/5/14)

AJ needs to be quicker of the ball, and he seems nonchalant at times to me. AJ is a great talent, he just needs more speed. I don't know if he has reached his max but he definitely needs more. Tons of tackles and great leader of men. We are lucky he is a Vol!

Not saying anything different, just that as a business decision there is less incentive for an ILB to leave early. Even if he is the best in the country his draft stock will only go so high because of the position that he plays.

It's really a lot more than 25% remaining. To have a 1.5 GPA he has failed some classes. But don't worry... credit recovery is rampant in H.S these days. He will have that 1.5 GPA shining at 2.5 before fall semester is done if he chooses.

Summer school raises your GPA as well. That was how it has been done for ages for anyone who failed a class and doesn't want to get behind. I can remember 'summer school' being a lingering threat and incentive to not fail anything as I could think of few things worse than that when I was younger. I doubt if it's changed at all.

Fail a few classes get stuck with summer school and your F's are converted to your summer school grade -- it's not a new idea at all. That would give him even more opportunity.

Times have changed. There are many H.S. in the state of TN that offer a credit recovery class during the normal school day....lol. Who would go to summer school if you can do that? No one... thats why credit recovery is on a waiting list...Seniors get first dibs then so on...

H.S. diploma's have become an absolute joke... I have to stop now before I really say how I feel...

We took Jabo because we could get him in as well. It does not always play out like you hope.

Never saw where they had any confidence of this. Jabo was more of like oh crap jay you missed on every rb and we need somebody who you got. Jay pulls out Jabo. They took an outside shot at it but have always had an idea he might not make it and would place him

In 2016 that will change. The NCAA will require 10 core courses completed before your senior season and none can be replaced with repeated courses

Is that just for Tennessee?

No new NCAA rule. They are raising the GPA requirement to qualify and compete, but the old requirement will allow a recruit to earn scholarship and practice with the team until he qualifies to compete.

Here are the new requirements:
(For college-bound student-athletes first entering a Division I college or university on or after August 1, 2016.)
Full Qualifier must:
• Complete 16 core courses (same distribution as in the past);
• Ten of the 16 core courses must be completed before the seventh semester (senior year) of high school.
• Seven of the 10 core courses must be English, math or science.
• Have a minimum core-course grade-point average of 2.300;
• Grades earned in the 10 courses required before the senior year are “locked in” for purposes of grade-point average calculation.
• A repeat of any of the “locked in” courses will not be used to improve the grade-point average if taken after the seventh semester begins.

• Meet the competition sliding scale requirement of grade-point average and ACT/SAT score (this is a new scale with increased grade-point average/test score requirements); and
• Graduate from high school.

Exactly.

He said in the interview that Thigpen told them they were taking 4 LB's, so with Weatherd and Bryant, that leaves Mouhon and Bates as the other 2. I will take that!

So TW now that you are here, if he gets qualifying grades, does UA make a push?

It will depend. Not taking many LBs this year hence why a lot of UA people thought he would end up at AU. Which btw has made many UA fans happy that he is headed to UT even though most wanted him a part of the class. I think timing will dictate. The staff really likes him but if others came onboard before he got his academics in order I doubt it.

I also believe what others have mentioned that he will get very close to this class for UT and it will be hard for someone to take him. He wanted some love and got it and I think it will be the motivation he needs to get to college. My best guess right now if UT has to be concerned may be more with AU in the end than UA. Again it is a numbers game the same with UT on WRs.

No man can reveal to you nothing but that which already lies half-asleep in the dawning of your knowledge.

You are halfway there already.

"Yes sir (the depth chart is a major factor) and then I wanted to be in the SEC and (Tennessee)'s in the SEC so can't go wrong," Bryant said.

"Coach Thig is a good dude," Bryant said. "He's straight up with you and that's what I like."

"They said they seen pretty much the same thing they seen on film —*I'm fast and stroke," said Bryant, who had planned on camping at Miami after leaving town but wanted to snag one of the 'backer spots available on The Hill.

"I sat down with (Jones) before I left, and he told me about how good of a player I am and how bad he wants me."

"I loved it. Everything was nice. I liked the stadium. It was wild," he said.

"Yes sir, that will be odd (playing against Alabama) but it is what it is. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get what you want," Bryant said.

On what he brings to the table:

"I bring grits, eggs and ham," Bryant said. "I bring it all. I bring everything I've got every play."
