'14 AL LB Gavin Bryant (UT Signee 2/5/14)

I see a lot of talk about the grade issues. Anyone know just how bad it is? Most coaches can tell if a kid will be able to get into college going into his SR year. A lot of these kids who have grade issues are WAY behind. Is there actually a chance of him getting in or is this just a Camion Patrick kind of commitment? Let the kid commit but all along knowing he will head to Juco?

I have no idea where he is at since the semester finished but someone posted in March on a UA board that his GPA was a 1.5 and ACT score was 14 and why most schools were a wait and see. It could have improved by now.

Vq said that our staff already has a gameplan and he is expected to qualify

Grades alone don't determine whether or not someone qualifies but how high they have to score on their ACT in order to qualify. There's good reason for that -- a student shouldn't be denied enrollment just because of a poor GPA when both the ACT and SAT are decent indicators of future success.

The truth is no one knows a student's real grade situation unless that student releases that information to you. I'd imagine that he's signed up with eligibility clearinghouse the NCAA runs and can reasonably make up for past grades. He has 2 semesters plus the ACT to do so.

Like I posted in March the word was

GPA 1.5 ACT 14

And if that is indeed accurate. I would not count on this working out. Hope the kid can get things right and the staff is able to help him along the way.

GPA won't be a problem. ACT on the other hand... take it four more times and concentrate on one subject each test. Combine the four and i'll be damn... he is cleared.

SN: This kid is ridiculously athletic for a LB... 247 gets it.

People, listen to Hubbs over TW, no offense

Both instate staffs I am sure have been directly in contact with his HS coach and probably know the situation far better than Hubbs, hence why they are in a holding pattern.

UT has the luxury with so many spots this year they can take that chance, but UA for example are still waiting on 3 for the 2013 class, 2 of which do not look like they are going to make it and the new SEC rules still make non-qualifiers count once they sign unlike before. But yes I am sure there is a plan that will make it work for him but it is all up to him. Something he has not done for 3 years and now has 1 year to do it. D Paige and J Cook were in the same boat last year for UA. Both signed and now neither looks like they will make it in.

I hope the kid makes and he seems to have the determination to do so.

I doubt his grades are that low unless he decided to not do anything once the HS football season was over. Then it would be a semester GPA rather than a 3 year GPA or even a 1 year GPA. I can't imagine any high school that would allow a kid to play HS football with that as an average for a year let alone three.

Kids got some of the best LB film I have seen. If he can get qualified, he would be a steal for us. As I said, I hope he can get it done and make it as part of our 2014 class.

No one knows including the sites for sure where he actually is currently. But I have followed football enough that if a kid can play HS coaches find ways for these players to stay eligible(Jovon Robinson) and if not JUCO and Prep school would not be a major player with so many and the NCAA would not use the sliding scale to do whatever they can to get these kids eligible.

Naive.

That's fine and they may be right, but Hubbs is usually rock solid. If he says Bryant should qualify, that's what I'm going to believe. I don't think he or the other VQ guys have a shortage of peeps down there either.

Not all NFL positions are created equal and ILB seems like it is near the bottom of the list right now in terms of priority.

Right now, everything is about defending the pass. Getting to the QB and keeping guys from getting to your QB.

As a ILB who is only average at covering WRs I don't think AJ stands to make such an outrageous sum of money that he's a lock to go pro.

It could happen anyways but I don't think he stands to be drafted nearly as high as somebody like McCullers or Tiny.
AJ needs to be quicker of the ball, and he seems nonchalant at times to me. AJ is a great talent, he just needs more speed. I don't know if he has reached his max but he definitely needs more. Tons of tackles and great leader of men. We are lucky he is a Vol!

This is a calculated risk for sure, but it will be massive if it pays off. Having him committed this early is great, it gives him a goal to keep in mind every day.

High School is 4 years. He has 1 of 4 left to get his grades right. That's 25% remaining. I wouldn't write off anyone with one quater of his tenure remaining.

It's really a lot more than 25% remaining. To have a 1.5 GPA he has failed some classes. But don't worry... credit recovery is rampant in H.S these days. He will have that 1.5 GPA shining at 2.5 before fall semester is done if he chooses.
