'14 DC CB D'Andre Payne (UT commit 4/3/13)

Concur, lineman are always important, but a good DB can make average DL excellent in pass defense. Hope Payne commits soon, would be a tremendous pickup.

You've got it confused. A good lineman can make an average secondary look good. No DB is good covering 5-7 seconds every play.

It works both ways. If you can't cover for 3.5-4 seconds, you'll never get pressure on the qb.

If you can't cover 3-4 seconds you need to find a new position. Lol

We couldn't do it last year, and neither could the titans. And 3-4 seconds is the length of time that a qb normally has to get rid of the ball. So it sounds easy, but it's def not.

I just don't want to hear about it in the thread for a db who may have just committed. Go to a linemans thread if you want to have that convo.

Anyway, I hope what were hearing is true. I'm excited about this class, and we need all the talented DBs we can find.

Agreed. It's freakin March, 5 weeks removed from 2013 NSD. None if us really expected to have this type of momentum this early, regardless if the players' positions, right. I say we fill any needs anytime we can do it. The Big uglies are a big need and I have no doubt they'll start filing throughout the year. Patience.

And neither team was very good last yr because of it...

Is it me, or does he look better on offense the a db? I would have liked to see more ints out of a db. He did do a pretty good job breaking up passes, but he looked to struggle to get a guy down, partly because of his small build I am sure. I think he will have a better senior season now that he has had time to gain muscle and work on cleaning up technique as all high school recruits do. I should add I just based this off his highlight video, so he may have had more ints than I thought.

Like I said if you can't cover 3-4 seconds at this level you're not a CB. You're just a DB. Big difference IMO.....

I noticed earlier someone claimed he had committed today. To find out he named a top 10 is kind of a letdown to say the least. :p

My bad. I see someone mentioned it already. Had not got that far yet. Carry on. :)

it's cool man. I don't think it's out of the range of possibility that he has committed, just waiting till tomorrow to go public. Alot of commitments are announced the Sunday or Monday after a visit, and he did stay in Knox for an extended amount of time. That's just my take, no inside info or anything.

“We had a fun weekend,” said Payne, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 177 overall prospect and No. 15 cornerback in the 2014 class.

“(Friday) we went and toured their facilities, the weight room, the meeting rooms, the different coaches’ offices — stuff like that — and I really liked it. And I got to go in meetings (Saturday) morning with some coaches. I got to watch the practice and just bonded with the coaches and the team more. It’s just been real good.”

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Payne, who claims approximately 35 offers to date, said he “definitely” plans to return to Tennessee.

Payne said he had heard good things about the Vols from fellow Top247 cornerback Jalen Tabor — one of Payne’s new teammates at Friendship, where he recently transferred from nearby H.D. Woodson High School — and Tennessee easily lived up to his expectations.

He said he was most impressed by “the coaches and how they function with the people here and the team.”

“Everything is like a family down here, man, and that’s real good,” Payne said. “For them to be a new coaching staff, it seems like they’ve been here for years, and that’s real good. I can see that this area, Knoxville, they really love this coaching staff, and they’re trying to do some good things.”

First-year Vols linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen, who previously had recruited Payne for Auburn, and defensive backs coach Willie Martinez both spent plenty of time with Payne during his stay in Knoxville.

“Thigpen, he is recruiting me, and Martinez, he’s my position coach, so I’ve spent the most time with them,” said Payne, who claims to have been timed at 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash. “They’ve just been telling me to join the dynasty that they’re trying to get together. They’ve got a lot of guys that’s already committed, and they’re just trying to get me to hop on board.”

“They said they need corners bad, and I can see that,” he said. “They’re kind of light on corners this year. They’ve got a safety committed — Todd Kelly — already, so I guess they’re looking for another guy to commit. They need corners and stuff like that, and that’s good. I can be able to come in and play early. That’s another big thing.”

Seeing Tennessee’s facilities, including the Vols’ new football training center, made a big impression on Payne, too.

“I actually watched the video of the facilities on YouTube, I’d say right around the time that they offered me,” he said. “I was fascinated with them, man, and just to see how it really is in person is just even better.

“Everything they’ve got going on, man — the weight room, the indoor field, the meeting rooms and everything — it’s just awesome facilities.”

Paul Harris, a fellow D.C.-area native who’s now a freshman wide receiver at Tennessee, talked with Payne throughout the weekend. Payne said Harris “was just telling me about the other recruits that’s already committed and how the team could be if I was to possibly come down here — how it could be in the next year or two.”

Just messing buddy. I only joined twitter a few months ago to 1. Follow my teenage boy and 2. Get real time recruiting information. You can follow all these guys that UT is after without creeping on them, they'll never know you're there unless you actually tweet/message them. Even then they love the attention.

I also follow anything UT including all coaches, govolsrxtra, 247, the sportswriters like Rucker and Hyams (although Jimmy is usually the last to the party), Ainge etc.

Gotta warn you though, it's every bit as addicting as VN. But I highly recommend it.

I don't know KB if I can handle another addiction, I can't quit (butch)Jonesing for VN hahaha. I do like to keep up with all the recruits and what they are thinking. Maybe I'll just be a silent tweeter
