"He told me from the beginning that he wants to be recruiting me and he was going to be on the phone with me all the time and messaging me on Facebook," Bates said. "That really feels good coming from him, the head coach, knowing that he doesn't have that kind of ego as a big, top coach to not just speak to the players and just having to speak whenever instead of making the time and having a secretary before you talk to them. It's definitely made it more on a personal level instead of just a coach."
Besides getting to know the coaching staff, Bates has already started forming relationships with fellow Tennessee commitments.
""I've made a lot of connections with the guys. I've met with Jalen Hurd, Todd Kelly and a bunch of other guys. They've been texting me," Bates said. "It's kind of crazy the connections we've already built and I already know some future teammates instead of going somewhere where they have nobody I know. So, that's good."
With his decision now under his belt the Ponte Vedra High School start can concentrate on his senior season, a strong reason he decided to end his recruitment this summer.
"Just talking to my parents and my coaches and guys that have done it before, I've heard both ways, committing before their senior year has taken a lot of stress off of them and they've been able to focus on their senior year and their senior season and that's what I wanted to do," Bates said. "Instead of having that stress of making sure I'm talking to coaches and coaches are coming and watching me and evaluating me. It just gives me a good chance to focus on what we're trying to do and my senior season."
