"Remember 4 star prospect safety Cortez McDowell from Locust Grove, Georgia? For the longest time McDowell was thought to be a silent commitment to Tennessee. Yeah, that guy. The rumor gets better. McDowell was going to publicly commit at the Orange & White game. Well, here we are almost to July 4th and still no public commitment from McDowell. What the ! Now, looks like Tennessee is pretty much even with Auburn and Georgia for McDowell. Butch Jones is waiting on McDowell. In fact, with spots as limited as they are in the class, McDowell could become a casualty if he doesn’t do something soon."

Interesting later today he says he's committing soon. Probably means nothing.

If he comes to UT then Great. If he does not that's okay too. Safety is a spot I'm not too worried about. Randolph, McNeil, JRM, TKjr, and I'm sure we will get another in this class.

Ya I'm not sweating McDowell like I am CB, DT, and LB recruits.

Seems like Jones understands the needs in the league.. Lots of speed on the edges on defense and and real change of direction players on offense...So far he has stayed away from RiSK players.. Time will tell

Cortez McDowell is scheduled to be in Knoxville as well on Saturday for the first time in several months. At one point, the Vols were very much the favorite with McDowell and he was extremely close to committing on several occasions. Now, Tennessee is in a fight for McDowell with Auburn really coming on hard lately for the 4-star safety.

Don't look for him to do anything this weekend but it could go a long ways to helping the Vols get some momentum back in the race for McDowell.

From the ESPN Georgia site. Obviously I don't think they are a factor in the end, especially as much as FSU and Auburn, but it's nice to see us not only competing, but in the running to land these top recruits.

9. S Cortez McDowell (Locust Grove, Ga./Locust Grove)
6-1, 200 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 221

Why they want him: Georgia needs to bring in a safety in this class, and McDowell represents the highest rated target the Bulldogs have focused on. He is a well-rounded prospect that makes the most of his abilities.

Who else wants him: Auburn, Florida State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt have all made early pushes for McDowell, although he also got plenty of attention at the Mark Richt 7-on-7 Camp earlier this month.

Odds they get him: 20 percent

I honestly think this is basically our way of giving McDowell a chance to commit and be a Vol. If he doesn't jump on and commit, then he may lose his spot. DJ Smith was said to have Tennessee as his leader, but you see how that played out. Butch isn't waiting around. He's filling spots, and adding talent. That's how you get things done in recruiting. With that being said, I hope we land McDowell!

What in the world does DJ Smith have to do with any of this? Smith did not "lose his spot", he simply chose another school over us.

Cortez is not Truitt...

When did Smith commit? Rivals nor 247 have him committed. In fact, 6 of the 7 crystal ball predictions on 247 are predicting him to UT.

We stopped recruiting Smith from what I've gathered. He had us as his leader, and then it seemed as if he just went silent on anything Tennessee. Why waste time on someone that doesn't wanna be a Vol? Therefore, if McDowell doesn't make a move soon, I don't think we're going to wait around on him when he is replaceable. We're in on plenty of other talented players at his position.
