'14 GA S Cortez McDowell (UT Signee 2/5/14)

We stopped recruiting Smith from what I've gathered. He had us as his leader, and then it seemed as if he just went silent on anything Tennessee. Why waste time on someone that doesn't wanna be a Vol? Therefore, if McDowell doesn't make a move soon, I don't think we're going to wait around on him when he is replaceable. We're in on plenty of other talented players at his position.

We did not stop recruiting Smith

I doubt we stopped recruiting him. I do think he may have more less eliminated us as he is planning to wait till NSD to announce. With all the DB talent we are recruiting/offered, I think we will be full at the position before NSD. When these recruits ask the coaches, "will you hold a spot for me until I decide"? I would bet the response is NO, we are going to fill the class and some recruits move on from considering Tennessee. Smith did just say that he would decide between USCe and Clemson on NSD. I think he's headed to Clem$on.

You are thinking of Wesley Green.

My bad. Just ignore my other post then! With that being said, if given reason, it's not out of the ordinary to believe that this staff won't wait around forever on a recruit that they feel could be replaced. But I'd love to land Smith and McDowell, both are talented players, and would contribute in our secondary.

What in the world does DJ Smith have to do with any of this? Smith did not "lose his spot", he simply chose another school over us.

Cortez is not Truitt...

Didn't realize a non committed recruit selected a school over another school.

Probably talking about him stating that he would pick USCe or Clem$on on NSD. That would indicate that Tennessee is no longer a possibility.

Seemed to me it was one article written with a Clemson bias. Doubt very seriously that a recruit will make that bold of a declaration and wait 8 months to announce his decision. A lor of these interviews pick and choose what recruits say and quote them in a favorable light to their subscribers. If Smith was that close to a decision, an announcement would be imminent IMO.

Could be that the article that quoted him saying that is biased. If it is a direct quote though, tough to print it without the recruit calling it out for not being accurate. Of course if the article was printed via a pro UT biased perspective, it would be 100% accurate and just taken as fact.

Do you ever watch the videos of these Q and As? Almost ever analyst, including the pro UT ones ask questions to put the school they are covering over. All of these rivals and 247 articles are about generating revenue, nothing more. Most of the time these interviews occur right after a kid has done drills and hasn't had a chance to catch his breath.

I don't get very giddy about any of these kids until they actually commit, even then there is the matter of the letter of intent being signed. Just find it odd that Smith will not entertain any other school for the next 8 months, and that's it. Just doesn't sound very realistic. It will be interesting to see where he OVs at. If he goes to somewhere other than Clemson or USCe, then the article is garbage IMO.

By what I've read, Smith didn't state that. There aren't any quotes from Smith. The Clemson "insider" is about as reliable as 247 crystal ball predictions.

If he has already made his decision and just wants to wait till NSD as some kids do, it makes perfect sense. The kid could still take OVs to just have fun. If I were a coach other than the 2 he named, I would have noted what he said before wasting one of my OVs on him.

Clemson247- Who are your leaders now? When will you make your decision?
Smith "Clemson and South Carolina. I will decide on signing day."
Clemson247- Do you have an plans for camps or visits this summer?
Smith- "No sir. No camps. I made a visit to South Carolina last week. I will visit Clemson and South Carolina again this summer. I will be at the Clemson-Georgia game and go to a South Carolina game but haven't decided which one yet."
Clemson247- What is it about South Carolina and Clemson you like?
Smith- "At South Carolina I really have a good relationship with (Gamecocks recruiter) G.A. Mangus and (secondary coach) Grady Brown. I got to hang out with Chris Moody and T.J. Gurley which was cool. At Clemson, I talk to (defensive coordinator) Brent Venables a lot. I like the family atmosphere at Clemson and the school. They have a great foundation at Clemson off the field that's different than any other school."
Clemson247- Have Clemson and South Carolina talked about which side of the field you'll play corner or early playing time?
Smith- "Clemson and South Carolina both said they thought I could play cover or coverage. They both told me theres an opportunity for early playing time."

Clearly UT is still very much in it. Yes, kidding.

I guess it makes sense if believe everything on the surface is all there is to the story. It really has nothing to do with UT either. It has more to do with us being on the outside looking in, and not having the same amount of information as those who are actually doing the recruiting.

My initial comment was toward a poster who made a definitive statement about a practice such as recruiting when there is nothing definitive about it. I don't if UT is in it or not, but I do know there isn't enough information to determine whether he turned UT down or vice versa, or even if we are completely out of it. Time will tell.

Guess I was wrong. Sorry, I didn't see all of that earlier.
