That visit was just a visit for my brother to get up there and see it for himself, since he hadnt been to Tennessee, said McDowell, whos ranked the nations No. 192 overall prospect and No. 12 safety in the 247Composite, which equally weighs prospect rankings and ratings from major recruiting media outlets.
He liked it. He liked the structure. He liked the bond between the coaches that are there, for them being in their first year there. He said he likes the bond and the energy that theyre bringing to the program.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound McDowell said hes now hoping to announce my top two schools in a couple weeks, perhaps shortly after the Fourth of July.
McDowell has visited Tennessee, Florida State, Vanderbilt and Auburn over the past five weeks. He also planned to travel to Ohio State this week, but he said that trip has been canceled because my family isnt going to be able to get off work.
It was just, like, three recruits there, so it was more one-on-one time with the coaches, said McDowell, who claims more than 20 scholarship offers to date. They showed us the academic counselors and all that we got to meet them and we really spent time in the building, inside Thornton (Athletics Student Life Center). We talked about the academics and stuff, so that was a lot different for that visit.
I spent the most time with Coach Martinez, McDowell said. We were just talking. We hadnt talked in a while, so we were pretty much just catching up with each other.
(Jones said) that Im highly needed at Rocky Top, and hes going to be loyal to me and my family if were going to be loyal back to them. So, pretty much, if I commit to Tennessee, then hes going to be loyal to me and my family and make sure everythings all right, make sure they dont have to worry about me when Im up there stuff like that.
Me and (Sutton) played together, McDowell said. A couple years ago we played together, so our bond is real good with each other. We know each other really well. (Sutton said) how pretty much theres nothing, really, that you cant do at Tennessee.
Theres so many things you can do there, so in Tennessee youll never feel homesick because theres always something new to do. Every day, you can do new things to get your mind off, like, your family and stuff. For myself, thats something big for me, hearing that from Cam, because I like being at home a lot. Being able to, like, just get out and get around and have fun without missing my home, that sounds good for me.
(I like) the way the coaches interact with their players and the bond that coaching staff has, for them being in their first year together, he said.
McDowell said hes hoping to visit Tennessee, Florida State and Auburn again at some point, and he also wants to make a trip over to Georgia and then take my trip up to Ohio State and one to Arkansas.
The earliest is going to be August 2nd, and then the latest is going to be on signing day, McDowell said. Its still too up in the air (to say for sure). I kind of want to get back down, like, to a couple more schools and stuff to see them a little bit more before I decide on anything else.
