Folks, this is a 17 year old kid with a huge decision in front of him and lots of pressures (college coaches, high school coaches, friends, etc.) pushing and pulling him in many different directions. When I was thinking about college, I applied to well over 12 different schools after considering innumerable options (I don't think considering my options was a result of me being immature). I also made my final decision relatively late in the process after deliberating, agonizing over the decision and I wasn't a D1 recruit with countless coaches and assistant coaches calling and visiting me, etc.
From following McDowell's recruiting, it seems that some fans (or those who call themselves fans) are bashing the kid for a cancelled visit or two and for pushing back his decision. I remember that McDowell was going to visit Knoxville one time and a baseball game was rescheduled and interferred with the visit (I'm not sure why anyone takes issue with him fulfilling his commitment to his high school teammates). His timeframe has also changed for his commitment, but this, quite obviously, isn't that big of a deal because he needs to make the right choice and a choice that he will adhere to afterward. For me, I prefer the deliberate choice rather than an athlete that commits on a whim and then regrets it (which is happening pretty frequently these days), which then results in a decommitment and unncessary backlash.
McDowell is a very talented player and I really, really hope he will commit to becoming a Vol. I think adding McDowell and, hopefully, Gaulden to the current commitments will have UT poised to reclaim its rich heritage of having devastating secondaries. I think he is critical to this class in spite of my belief that CBJ will get another talented player if we can't get McDowell because McDowell seems to be a star in the making at a position of need.
