'14 GA S Cortez McDowell (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Wow, I've followed this guys' recruitment for a while, and haven't heard that he wanted to play baseball at all. Definitely have to like our baseball team. But have we extended that opportunity to him? First I've heard of the baseball side of things.

Baseball is definitely a big factor. UGA wasn't even under consideration until we fired Perno (old baseball coach) and hired Stricklin. Now UGA is in the thick of it. I don't think he commits to UGA, but that should give you an idea of how important baseball is to him in this process.

Our head coach is Butch Jones. You may want to reconsider.
I have full faith in Butch Jones. The thing that makes me see this as a negative is that he already has a date set and doesn't know if he is coming to the Foundation event, while he was at UGA's version.

Now that may very well mean that he wanted to see UGA and it didn't live up to UT. I just dont know.

UGA just took their last Safety commit, didnt they?

Actually no the coaches want one more safety. If UGA gets Cortez they will have Gant as a versatile swing guy while Glass will start off as a safety. If they don't then Gant will be the FS. Cortez met with Stricklin and knows he can play both football and baseball in Athens. Coach Stricklin seems to have hit it off with Cortez. I wouldn't predict Cortez to UGA right now, but UGA is in this much more heavily than many thought.

I doubt he picks UGA. He is gonna be y'all's 3rd Safety in this class and Matthews will only be a freshman.Harvey-Clemons is a Sophmore too right? I just don't see it.

I'm not feeling too good about our chances either. I think Auburn may take the cake on this one.

I'm just not sure. This guy was all Vol for a while, and we thought he was a lock to commit at the O&W game, and then it just all went away, and it's like we started over.

I'm HOPING that our recruiting him will pay off, but I don't know. I could really see it going either way.

I agree. I think AU has the edge now. Would love to get him though.

Oh definitely. A secondary haul of TKJr, Payne, Gaulden, McDowell, Berry and maybe an Adoree' Jackson would be about as good as it gets.

I don't really see Adoree' Jackson happening, but the rest are totally possible.

It says right there that if he doesn't make it, it'll be because of a baseball tourney in TX. Not because he'd rather go to UGA.

If he comes to foundation day he'll be a Vol. Wharton & TKJr in his ear allllllll day. Not to mention, We have Butch JONES!

We've got Randolph a junior, McNeil, JRM, TKjr, maybe a Berry, maybe Gaulden. Not exactly wide open here either.

I didn't say it was, did I?

But for accuracy Gaulden is being recruited as a CB for UT & Randolph is a RS Sophomore.

You were using that reasoning for why he's less likely to go to UGA, and I was saying it's not better here. And I've seen people adamantly say Gaulden will be a FS. Other say CB. I think it will depend, but I'm hoping he's good enough to play CB.

Gaulden himself said UT was recruiting him as a Corner. I agree with you though, I hope he plays Corner.

How good is this guy at baseball? Is he good enough to be drafted by the MLB next year?

If you grab a Letter of Intent from a kid but he chooses to play baseball instead, do you get that scholarship back? I'm assuming no, so if this kid is as serious about baseball as it seems, that might be something to remember. A large amount of cash has a way of changing a young man's mind; just ask Ole Miss.

Regarding our recruitment of DBs, Vic might be a factor there as well. I've always heard and thought of Vic as an offensive player, slot or WR, along with returning kicks. But I heard Barton Simmons say he really showed out at Vaginabilt's 7 on 7 last week. Plus, he said when Independence played Station Camp earlier this Spring/Summer in a 7 on 7 that Vic also got the better of Josh Malone pretty consistently and that he had great athletic ball skills as a corner. Just tifwiw, but Vic MAY also factor in the DB equation, especially if Butch likes Gaulden as a safety. Again, tifwiw.

Then you haven't followed his recruitment very closely

● Tennessee - "The camaraderie of the coaching staff there is great. It is a first group of coaches and they look like they have been together for multiple years. They are all on the same page with each other so that's the big thing."

● Auburn - "I like how it is a family vibe for them. It seems like they put the players before football and everything else before football. That is the big thing."

● Georgia - "It is the in-state school and they are the first school to offer me with the Head Coach. It is Georgia. In this state, it is Georgia or Georgia Tech and over the years it has been proven that Georgia is the better team. It is Georgia."

Luke-warm comments about GA compared to his other comments, IMO. It looks like UT or the Barn.

Would not be surprised at all to see Vic at CB. I think that may be why we are still looking at WR options. If the coaches goal is to have 15 WRs on the roster, we should have stopped taking WRs earlier as we are over that #. Add Lauderdale yesterday and Booth any time now and IMO it points to Vic playing defense. JMO
