'14 IL LB Clifton Garrett

All I can say is if we can land Garrett this would be the sickest LB crew ever. The most special one in history maybe?

Yeah guys like Wilson, Thompson, and Westmoreland all at one time would beg to differ. Back then if you ran on the Vols you payed dearly. They were blasting runners all game.

Yep back in the day teams hated coming to play at Neyland because it was going to be an all day arse whoopin win or lose.

Is LSU still his leader?

According to the 247 guys, LSU does lead---however we have a shot he's OVing here during the Georgia game I believe. The fact that he didn't come up here during the summer wasn't favorable...but there is still a shot. Butch is his personal recruiter--there's always a chance!

Thanks!

Steve Kiner, All-American, 1968-1969.

SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 1969, Steve Kiner was a one-man wrecking crew during the 1969 Alabama game, amassing “five sacks, 11 tackles with five assists, four quarterback hurries, an interception and a forced fumble" (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football). As he came off the field, Kiner scolded the Tidy Bowl boys by saying, “Look at that old man (Bryant). He looks pitiful. There was a time when those crimson jerseys meant something.”

"Hacksaw" Jack Reynolds. All-American, 1969. UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football

Jackie Walker, All-American, 1970-71.

"Walker was a two-time All-America for the Vols his junior and senior years. In 1970, Tennessee's daunting defense collected 36 interceptions for a seemingly untouchable school record. Walker led the Vols with 82 tackles and 42 assists.

He finished his career with 11 interceptions, more than anyone who wasn't a defensive back during his time. He returned those picks for 281 yards and a then-NCAA record five touchdowns. The 281 interception return yards ranked fourth at the time on Tennessee's all-time chart behind three defensive backs - all his teammates" (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football).

What year? I'm a 1985 kid became a Vol in 1992 and never looked back. And I was raised to be a Bama fan. :)

Kiner was a Vol 67-69 and was the guy that made the infamous quote about Ole Miss when their Qb was Peyton's dad. Someone said something like "What about Ole Miss - they've got a lot of horses?" Kiner replied: "you don't know the difference between a horse and a mule." Something like that. Ole Miss mopped the floor with the the #1 ranked 7-0 Vols 38-0.

Hacksaw Reynolds played in NFL for Rams & 49ers in 70s and early 80s.

Walker was one of the first African American football Vols.

Jackie was extremely light (ca. 170 lbs.) for a linebacker, even in that era, but he was incredibly quick and would have made a great NFL safety. He was drafted by the 49ers, I believe, with that intent but they really didn't give him an adequate mount of time to make the adjustment to the new position and ultimately cut or released him.

Jackie also was our first African-American to achieve All-American honors. He was then followed by Roland James (1979), Willie Gault (1982) and the great Reggie White in 1983 (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football).

Walker paid a price due to his openness about his sexual orientation. Its not talked about now in the NFL so just think about how it was then.

No disrespect but do you think they were better than Al Wilson and crew? Just a question. :) it's hard to beat those boys for athleticism and tenacity. Al was so relentless it's crazy.

Two different eras so it's kinda like apples and oranges. Suffice it to say though I would take either crew in a heartbeat. I'm a 1980 kid and was a freshman at UT in 1998 so I have to admit I'm a little partial to Al and co.

I compare our current guys to Al and crew. I have a hard time calling AJ a "beast" after watching Wilson and Co. just rip RBs up in games. And they were much smaller but hit much much harder. They were very nasty LBs. Looks like this staff is back recruiting that type of player at the position.

Very true. I have thought the same in regards to how they are recruiting the position. I absolutely loved watching Al Wilson play...definitely one of my all-time favorite Vols.

I've never seen a single LB better than Al in '98. Add Raynoch and E-mo and that is a wrecking crew.

I'm a 70 kid so never saw Kiner, Reynolds or Walker. Just heard stories for yrs - which means they were gooood.

3 NFL lbs at once is impressive regardless what era.

Well said. Big Al was an absolute force in 1998. He and Raynoch were unreal. E-Mo definitely made his share of plays as well.. Things are looking up at the positon now as well. The future of UT LB's is very bright.
