'14 IL LB Clifton Garrett

No disrespect but do you think they were better than Al Wilson and crew? Just a question. :) it's hard to beat those boys for athleticism and tenacity. Al was so relentless it's crazy.

As a trio, yes. Ultimately, the only true measure of greatness is the degree to which a player's performance dwarfed those of his peers. If Walker was playing today, he would be light, even for a cornerback. Kiner, on the other hand, was a specimen. He is listed in the NFL archives at 6-1, 220 lbs. His performance against Alabama in 1969 is the only single-game performance by a Tennessee linebacker that, in my opinion, equaled, if not surpassed, Al Wilson's great game vs. Florida in 1998.

Steve Kiner, All-American, 1968-1969.

SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 1969, Steve Kiner was a one-man wrecking crew during the 1969 Alabama game, amassing “five sacks, 11 tackles with five assists, four quarterback hurries, an interception and a forced fumble" (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football). As he came off the field, Kiner scolded the Tidy Bowl boys by saying, “Look at that old man (Bryant). He looks pitiful. There was a time when those crimson jerseys meant something.”

"Hacksaw" Jack Reynolds. All-American, 1969. UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football

Jackie Walker, All-American, 1970-71.

"Walker was a two-time All-America for the Vols his junior and senior years. In 1970, Tennessee's daunting defense collected 36 interceptions for a seemingly untouchable school record. Walker led the Vols with 82 tackles and 42 assists.

He finished his career with 11 interceptions, more than anyone who wasn't a defensive back during his time. He returned those picks for 281 yards and a then-NCAA record five touchdowns. The 281 interception return yards ranked fourth at the time on Tennessee's all-time chart behind three defensive backs - all his teammates" (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football).

That was an amazing team set a record 36 interceptions in one 10 game year...Alabama's Ken Stabler completed 6 passes and threw 7 interceptions against that defense...

They also had 3 mid air fumble interceptions because they were beating the QB's pitch to the running back.

Played against Archie Manning at Ole Miss, Pat Sullivan, AU
Franco Harris, Lionel Mitchell

While the 6-foot-2, 228-pound Garrett will give each school an opportunity to make a run at the front-running Tigers, word we’ve received is that the Vols are the only legitimate threat to LSU at this point.

Ranked by the 247Composite as the nation’s No. 1 outside linebacker, Garrett will take his first-ever visit to Tennessee the weekend of Oct. 4. He is excited about the current recruiting class the Vols have, which ranks No. 4 nationally, and he’s like what he’s heard from the coaching staff.
