'14 IL LB Clifton Garrett

"Quick update on Clifton Garrett

Both Josh Hemholdt, our Midwest analyst, and myself have talked to Garrett tonight and Hemholdt will have a story out before too long with quotes from Garrett, but just wanted to pass along what he said to me and a few more notes.

From talking to Garrett you could tell he really liked Tennessee and the visit certainly helped the Vols moving forward. The question will be is it enough to overcome LSU.

He'll be taking that LSU visit last, with Ole Miss receiving a visit as well. Starting to feel like it's a three-team race with Tennessee, Ole Miss and LSU right now and Tennessee has a some momentum, but is it enough is the question."

"It was definitely a really unique experience for me," Garrett said. "I had a really good time, as did my dad and my mom. It was a really good atmosphere and we were very impressed."

"I was on the river cruise and I was playing some NBA2K with some of the players," Garrett said. "I got a chance to hang out with the coaches on the boat. I hung out with Coach [Butch] Jones and he is a real good guy. I was talking with Coach [Tommy] Thigpen and my family. My dad and him got along real well."

"I got a chance to hang out with [Hendrix] and a few other recruits," Garrett said. "I was with Dillon Bates a lot, and there were a bunch of us just having a really good time. During the game we were all sitting by each other and it was a real crazy atmosphere. I was sitting next to Bill Bates, his wife and Dillon."

"They were basically telling me that Tennessee is on the rise, and I definitely got a chance to see that for myself," Garrett said. "The coaches are serious about everything and know what they want to do with that program. They are bringing in some of the top recruits, and brought in some top coaches in the off-season."

Also from Josh...

"Chatted with Clifton Garrett tonight about his official visit to Tennessee this weekend. Big key here was that his parents were along, and sounds like dad hit it off with Coach Thigpen. All in all, very good vibe from Clifton coming out of the visit."

Holy ish if we pull Garrett....

Ole Miss doesn't compare to UT, but they have the Treadwell effect working.

LSU will be tough.

Pretty cool that he got to sit with Bill Bates. Kid is real blessed and lucky.

“It was good, I had a real good visit, it was crazy. It blew me away and it was above my expectations,” Garrett said.

“It was crazy when I got there it was just such a huge stadium, I just looked up when I was standing on the field and the stadium was standing on top of you, it was crazy,” Garrett said. “When you walked out form the locker room and out of the tunnel, i just looked up to see 100-thousand people wearing orange? It was crazy. everyone was real hyped up.”

Had a great trip. Talked defensive schemes with Thig. Good opportunity for playing time.

Sounds like there is not much more tennessee could've done besides win in OT by a field goal and everybody rush the field, but besides that Butch and co. did great!! Only time will tell now!

Only time would tell, but they would have a very tall mountain to climb to achieve the status of Steve Kiner, Jack Reynolds, and Jackie Walker. I don't remember how much playing time Walker received in 1969, but Steve Kiner (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football) was a two-time All-American (1968, 1969); "Hacksaw" Reynolds (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football) also was an All-American in 1969, and Walker (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football) immediately succeeded them as an All-American in 1970 and 1971.

Would that be the best LB corps UT has ever had?

On paper it's up there. The 1997 starters are tough to beat. I know Leonard Little played a hybrid role that year, but you've got Little, Al Wilson, and Raynoch Thompson. Eric Westmoreland would have been one of the backups too.

Wow. When you see that on paper it really pops - kind of like their pads taking on a RB.

I feel really good about Malone, Hendrix and Mosely.

Garrett for some reason seems like the one we will finsih 2nd for.

Hope I'm wrong.
