'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Juco recruiting has it's good and bad much like anything else. There is usually a clear reason why a kid ended up at a Juco vs qualifying right from HS. While pointing out CP as a positive for his 1 year on the field, most had said he could not have returned for another year even if he had wanted to do so. Jucos are always a roll of the dice. UT has hit on some and missed badly on some. I do agree with Ron that it would be a bad idea to just stop recruiting/signing jucos altogether. The coaches just have to be a bit more selective in who they take. When a kid was supposed to be an EE, then around May, now he is looking at additional summer school work, it's not looking very good at all. This usually does not play out well.

UT has missed on more prospects JuCo wise in the last 5 years than we have been successful with. Even a player like Daniel McCullers, yet drafted, was a very marginal player given his size for the 2 years he played at Tennessee. Byron Moore is another player that comes to mind. Hopefully Chris Weatherd will make it in, but obviously something is not adding up.

take a look at our non-juco recruiting - our juco recruiting likely has a higher hit rate than that

people not cutting it, not qualifying, leaving, going pro early, etc is just part of the game

not sure why people hyperfocus on this with jucos

noone said to stop recruiting high schoolers after Dbonner, Dbourque, Dgray, Ahill, Ahoward, Jmeredith, Dphillips, Qwatson, and Ttaylor aren't in the program

btw those are all from 2012 - compared against that the 1 year of great production we got from CP, 2 years of decent production from big dan, and 1 yr of good production from sentimore don't seem bad at all - more than we got from half the high schoolers in the class - and several more we could likely add to that list after a year or so

Per Doug Matthews the GPA requirement for juco kids has been raised from a 2.0 to a 2.5 and he seems to think it is a long shot at this point for the kid to make it in. FWIW.

He has stuck by his guns for sure. He's been saying he won't make it in for a LOOOOONG time now. Hope Chris proves him wrong.

Per Hubbs, it sounds like Doug Matthews could be wrong. Sounds like Chris is on course to get in provided he has a solid 1st session of summer classes.

Imma roll with this until it's official that he's not making it in. Give the young man the benefit of the doubt, keep it positive.

This.

Doug is well connected. Couple this with his arrival being delayed multiple times, there is some serious smoke re: Weatherd qualifying. I wouldn't be surprised. Really hope he pulls all together though, he is much needed.

Tennessee's recruiting (period) has been a train wreck for the better portion of a decade. Let us just go with that. Oh, and Sentimore was a joke by the way.

Yep I'm pretty much in the same boat. Just hoping he has a really good summer semester. If so then I think he will be good to go but those summer classes are going to be what it all comes down to. I have no doubt that if he dedicates himself to his classes the same way he does on the field then he will make it, just got to grind and do it. Get it done Chris!

Subscribers? To his free radio show?

Nothing is "free" more people that listen the more he gets paid by the radio ads & such. He used to be spot on here lately he's just fishing for stuff. I like Doug, but he's been down on Weathered since we started recruiting him.

I'm not sure you understand how radio jobs work. He'll make the same wage regardless if how many people tune in to his show. Sure, if there was an abnormally high jump in ratings he might earn a new contract and get a lay raise, but that's most likely not happening with the time slot he occupies. He has a talk show based in Knoxville that speaks pretty much only to UT sports. That's a pretty specific niche. His numbers are going to stay pretty much the same no matter what he says.

And sorry, but listening to his show is free. It costs nothing. That is the definition of free. Even the stuff he writes is free on tnsportsradio.com.

I'm not saying any of his info is good or accurate. But I seriously doubt he's trolling for "subscriptions" as you said. Especially since that's pretty much impossible for him to do with his job.

Pretty much spot on but his show airs in Nashville as well.

Sexist and unethical IMO

Doug buys the air time from the station, and the sells his own ads. He is not an employee

So is the requirement different than HS?

We JUST had a parent meeting discussing requirements for playing at the different levels. D1 was 2.3 minimum GPA. With that GPA you had to score higher on the ACT. The higher your GPA, the lower your ACT could be for eligibility.

He buys his own airtime and then sells ads. More people that hear the ads the more money he gets paid from them. Now for his writeup, Chris Low does free write ups but you bet your ass ESPN is paying him. But I do know a lot about the radio business friend. It is 'free' for you to listen, but he's still getting paid to blabber on.

Colleges should be aware of the 2.5 rule by now. I'm hoping this is nothing more than speculation. Don't we get our second batch of '14 recruits on the 27/8/9th?

Said somewhere that yes, lower for HS kids.
