'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

I was referencing Madcap challenging your assertion that there wasn't anything statistical to back up your claim. He likes to come off as a know it all and ends up looking foolish more times than not. I think you are one of the better posters on here. Sorry for the confusion.

Doug Matthews has been calling this one before NSD and most of us, myself included din't want to believe it.

No worries my friend. My bad for the misunderstanding.

Fwiw, I still don't want to believe it. Hope he pulls it together, qualifies and the coaches have the patience to let it all happen. The kid really seems to want to be a Vol. But you're right...Coach Matthews has been on this one for a very long time

Heard on Doug Matthews' show. He cited statistics, which he stated were widely accepted by coaches, including our staff. He said this is why he was skeptical that Weatherd would even be in the '14 class when he didn't EE. Being a former JUCO himself, Doug seems to me to try and be up to speed on all things JUCO. He's my only source on this so perhaps he's right, perhaps he's wrong. Just relaying what I heard him say.

40% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Hope that he makes it in, but I am not counting on him to do much this next season if he does.

I probably come off as a know-it-all to you because I know significantly more about most things than you.

It is common sense that an EE JUCO has a greater liklihood to contribute early; however, what Matthews said, as repeated by the poster, was not the kind of conclusion one would state from a statistical analysis of the situation. It just isn't a sound conclusion.

He didn't cite a study, just simply said that it's pretty well accepted by college coaches and in particular our staff at UT, that a JUCO who transfers in and is not an EE is a risk because you're expecting that kid to come in and contribute early/immediately. He then said that "statistics show", evidently statistics that Butch and company believe in and tend rely on, that a JUCO player like Weatherd who enrolled in the summer, typically don't start making contributions until game 5-6 after they've had time to acclimate. Didn't say they couldn't (certainly a special player like CP did), didn't say they would, didn't say they wouldn't..... just that's accepted as "a truth" when discussing late-arriving JUCOs.

Fwiw, he also said it's less than 50-50 now that Chris makes it in at all.

Edit: he said this after saying, like he normally does when discussing factual matters like this about UTs program, that he had been up to Knoxville the previous week and met for awhile with Butch personally, some of the other staff and Bob Welton who's the Director of Player Personnel.

Not really, but keep telling yourself that. I'm sure in that pea brain of yours you probably know otherwise, which is why you attempt to create arguments with posters out of thin air. Take that last paragraph for example where you used a lot of words and really said nothing. But that's pretty much your style. Say a lot and add nothing. I'll listen to guys like Matthews and others who have actually earned their reputation instead of some loudmouth blowhard that plays make believe and acts like he is 'close' to the program.

Please don't stop now. It's just now getting good up in here.

Statistically speaking of course.
