'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

This young man is part of a group that is going to take the Orange back to or near the top of the college football landscape. He is a very important brick for our foundation.

When I hire people, I look at their application/resume. Then, they take some assessments that help us know them and their abilities. I then spend at least an hour in interview with them. This is the practice whether we're hiring a top paying job or an entry level job.

I assume that Jones & Co have assessed his athletic talent and decided he has that. I would also assume that they have spent time trying to get to know him.... to assess whether he has a champion's attitude and values.

If I don't get to about a 95% certainty that someone is going to not only have the talent to help our company but also the right personality and values to fit into our culture, they do not get hired. I would strongly expect that Jones has done this with Jerome and determined he's a guy who can get the job done.

Welcome Mr Dews and for my part let you son know I am excited to see what he's able to do at UT.

I hope every company can kinda properly hire somebody. All I would want are hard workers with enough talent. How do you weed out the idiots from the smart ones is my question?

MDObserver don't read to much into the interweb jackasses that post bull some aren't even Tennessee fans, and some most of us wish weren't Tennessee fans, just get young Mr Dews here and let him ball out!

Ask questions. The problem is knowing what questions to ask and that will vary depending on what you expect out of the person you are asking.

It really seems like the hardest part. I'd try to find someone with a chip on their shoulder.

Let him play a game before the criticism, some of yall forget yall dealing with children, after next year when he considered an adult, criticize away!

Just a piece of unsolicited advice, take it as you will, but I've rarely seen a parent posting on one of these boards end up going well. As a parent myself of an athlete, I can tell you that you have a much different investment and interest in your son than the fans on these boards do.

FWIW, Michael Sam was a 5.4 2* prospect when he was discovered by Mizzou. He wasn't ideal height at 6'2" and weighed only 222 lbs. He played I believe a small Tx HS team that went 4-6 his Sr year. His offer list was not impressive. Mizzou was his best offer.

This year he led the SEC in sacks and at times seemed unblockable. He developed his body into a solid 255 lbs without losing a step. But mostly the guy is just tenacious. He's got an aggressive streak and won't be kept down.

Jones' ability to recruit championship rosters will depend on two things. One, he'll have to go up against the elite recruiting schools and win his share of the players "everyone" wants- the 4/5* and heavily recruited 3*. He's done a nice job of that. But also, he has to go find gems that those programs and recruiters ignore that have REAL talent and the right mental/emotional make up. I hope he's doing that... because THAT will be what pushes him over the top. THAT will be the difference between very good rosters and championship rosters.

It's usually the idiots who get into management positions and control all the hiring…because they know how to kiss azz and play the perception game instead of really doing the work.

Or at least that's the way it is in the Pharmacy world of today….don't ruffle feathers, give everyone what they demand, and just collect your $$$…never mention anything remotely "negative", because then you detract from the management's vision and question their ability to lead effectively…..and no wonder--just look at a country who elected Osama-bama to a 2nd term of idiocy... :salute:

Kid is a great athlete. ESPN has him ranking with the best in 20 yard shuttle runs which a lot of coaches will tell you is most important in terms of speed in changing direction. With that tall frame he will grow into he will be special.

I work for the local water utility and it's the same thing. The guys that are the most useless in the field almost always seem to interview the best and get promoted.

Me too!
Unfortunately, some of the fans in the Football Forum sneak a post or to in the recruiting forum, spilling the garbage in here.
I know I, as most can't wait til Mr Dews wears the Big Orange!

For the record its been all kinds of derogatory sh@# said about him since the day he committed, from we dont want him to calling him Tink Tink ect. What kind of sh#$ is that!

Sorry you're having to experience this ugly side of our board...you have a talented son who showed out in front of Coach Jones and earned the chance to play on Saturdays in front of 100,000 devoted fans...trust in the coaching staff and YOUR SON...once he cements his place in VFL lore, the same negative posters on here will blast anyone who dares question him...happy Friday the 13th :)

It's sad that "fans" from other teams will come on our site saying ridiculous, insulting things trying to drive players away from being a Vol. Some people can be so stupid and juvenile. When you are on campus, you will see how much Vol fans care for them both as players and people. My interest is where he will be a star, LB or DL. I thought I read somewhere that he had grown 2" in height. Can't wait to see him play.

I don't disagree with you at all. First of all, I do not recommend that parents of athletes visit this board. Many of us cringe at the things that are said and the way some folks act towards others. There are a lot of posters that are not representative of the good people of East Tennessee and their values, nor the southern hospitality and gentility that you will find. As a graduate of UT, I owe much of my success to the relationships and the support that I received from the community where I grew up.

Spend some time there and you will soon understand what I'm talking about.

MDObserver, I'm sorry for the criticism your son has endured here. I understand a father's desire to defend their child. I personally feel most here are supportive of your son. We will be excited when he signs his LOI.

Any perceived negatives can be taken and turned into a positive in terms of motivation. Some of the greatest athletes have chips on their shoulders about slights along the way.
