Gaffney, SC

Has Tennessee offer, along with Clemson and South Carolina.

ESPN Scouting report

Strengths:
He's a superior athlete who scores from everywhere on the floor. He's as apt to bust a quick spin move as he is to dash through the lane for a drive. As he's grown in high school ball, he's worked on his perimeter game to the point where he's now a legitimate threat to shoot 3s. In high school, he's learned how to carry a team and balance scoring with creating for himself and others.

Weaknesses:
It'll be interesting to see if he becomes a better, more confident handler of the ball so that maybe he transitions from the small forward to the shooting guard slot. Defensively he's not as interested as he is on the offensive side. Guarding shouldn't be a problem given his tools but making the commitment to get into his man is an area that needs to be addressed.

Bottom Line:
Has the potential to be a high-major player and got a fast start as a freshman where he was productive and distinguished himself as one of the top players in his state. Love that he plays hard, communicates with teammates and plays under control. He's an elite, national level wing prospect.

Latest update from Dave Telep (ESPN recruting insider): "Peak is an outstanding athlete and soft spoken kid who has improved since the summer and is headed in the right direction. Forget the 40 spot he put on Ballard; it's the combination of an improved jumper and his tenacity that gets you on his side. He's going to be a stat-stuffing wing player.

Also from Telep:

As a freshman, L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) probably didn’t click off 10 3-pointers total. His high school coach said he played in the post. However, they realized his college position would be on the wing so they transitioned him to his natural small forward slot this season. So far, so good.

Against Ballard, he shot 13-of-24 from the field, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range and finished with 40 points. His team was outmanned and it needed a big game from him, which he delivered.

His transition to the small forward is going well. In fact, his high school coach said he’s shooting 40 percent from 3 this year, but his effort wasn’t all about firing 3s. He’s constant motion and always on the move. He’ll be the kind of guy who stuffs the stat sheet and throws down a momentum-changing dunk.

South Carolina was in the building to see his first game hereand the Gamecocks offered him a scholarship. So did the Clemson Tigers. Pretty soon, the in-state boys are going to have traffic around the Palmetto State’s best sophomore.
