'15 GA OLB Quarte Sapp (UT Signee 2/4/15)

I don't think they take more than 2 LBs this cycle considering how we loaded up last go-round. And I know a lot of people are high on DeBerry because of his ratings, but the guy is already 255lbs as a senior in HS. He's not going to get any smaller. I think he's a DE in college and we've got our targets set there. I'd be pretty surprised if he ends up at Tennessee. Furthermore, with us moving more and more towards nickel sets I think they're going to start steadily reducing the number of big bruiser MLB types in favor of smaller, lighter, superior coverage LBs. Of course they'll keep a couple around for traditional 4-3 sets (Cherry) but I would expect the other LB taken in this class to be of the JRM/Bates coverage-backer variety.

My thoughts as well.... except for the 1st sentence. When you actually think about who we took last cycle, its not that many.

Bates
Weatherd (LEO) (JUCO)
Bryant
Creamer

Berry could be LB/S/Nickel
Johnson moved to DE

Especially when you consider Weatherd is not in yet, and Creamer will need considerable time IMO to get up to speed at the position.

I figured for 3 in my class of 20. My last list was Cherry, Dews, and Sapp.

Yeah, you're right. I forgot about JJ moving to end and Berry's position undecided as of yet. Looking over our roster, though, we're damned thin at LB after AJ is gone. There's guys, but not ones that we want to be starting. I think Berry sticks at LB for that reason and you're going to see some combination of Bates/Berry, Bryant, and JRM starting in 2015. Which, IMO, is really a solid rotation. Just young.

QUARTE SAPP LB, 6-2/203, ALPHARETTA, GA.
Sapp has quickly become one of Tennessee's top linebacker targets this spring because of his athleticism and growing frame. Good thing for the Vols, Sapp lists them as one of his top contenders. Tennessee and Miami are currently the two teams sticking out to the athletic playmaker.

He's visited Tennessee once, with his mother and has visited Miami once, with his father. There are no firm plans for a decision date for Sapp right now, but the Vols and Canes are the two teams to beat right now.

#1 LB listed on UT's board. I very much like our chances here.

Ryan Callahan on who could make early commitment to Tennessee...

Tennessee has made Sapp a high priority for months, and he has continued to refer to the Vols as one of the teams recruiting him hardest. Miami appears to be Tennessee’s primary competition at this point, with North Carolina, Florida State and Ole Miss among the other teams still in the picture. He was impressed by his first visit to UT in early March for one of the Vols’ junior days, and they appear to be one of the teams to beat heading into the summer. Sapp has discussed perhaps making a decision by this summer, and Tennessee already has received four of the six early predictions on 247Sports’ Crystal Ball.

"Quarte Sapp will be back in Knoxville for the Orange Carpet Day on June 21 with his mother and is looking forward to seeing the Vols again. He said Miami and Tennessee continue to stick out to him and he hopes to see Miami again with his mother before making a decision at the end of the summer."

It's a good thing we run a different style defense than Jawja. We have a leg up on the 4-3 prospects. Plus we have Butch.
