'15 JUCO CB Justin Martin (UT Signee 2/4/15)

Sutton and Martin will be our starting CBs next year. No debate.

Moseley will be the next guy in. Gaulden and Berry will fight for the nickel. Randolph and McNeil will hold down the safety spots with TK next in line. McDowell is a LB.

Pretty much this. Martin will have to win the spot though

Since we are talking about the secondary, I am amazed about how much improved Ladarrell McNeil and Justin Coleman were this year compared to last year. Both had great years.

I may get flamed for this, but I'm not so sure Martin takes the job from Moseley right away. Mostly because of the experience/time in our strength and conditioning system/defensive system. That all gives Moseley a pretty decent leg up on Martin.

I'll have to see how much/little Moseley improves during the spring before I'm convinced Martin takes his spot from day 1.

At this time last year we all assumed McNeil and Josh Smith would be buried in the depth chart by newcomers and Blair was a day 1 starter. I'll believe Martin is the starter once reports from practices start consistently saying so.

TKjr will play/start next year. Going to be hard to keep him off the field. Too big of a playmaker and he'll make a huge jump his second year. Kid is a stud at safety.

Moseley is only maybe faster than Sutton. He's not quicker. Not near as explosive hitting wise. Ball skills aren't close along with the instincts. Look at them at the same stage. Sutton was more productive his freshman year without Maggitt, Barnett, or a Sutton level CB on the other side. He's got some upside but he's not anywhere near #23.

Martin is talented enough to unseat him too. Moseley hasn't shown the ability to go make big plays in coverage yet. If Martin shows this ability on game day along with his skill set and elite athleticism he'll overtake him.

Moseley is honestly a wild card. I agree with most of what you said in comparing him to Sutton, but no one accelerates in/out of breaks like Moseley. He is on another level. But that's only a single attribute of a great CB... He has a ways to go.

Jancek has said that Berry is a safety... Is it just pure speculation by posters on him being in the nickel?

I agree with all of this. Moseley will be a very good player for us. It's a good problem to have.

Yes, Berry looks like a true FS out there. Probably would've picked that ball off if Jakob Johnson hadn't been in the way. Gaulden looks natural at CB though.

Moseley doesn't trust himself to play up on WRs yet. Either he's too far off or he's right up on them and grabbing too much. He also has to look to make plays out there.

We need TK to take that spot for sure. Sutton was our only guy this year who could consistently make a play when the ball is in the air. Kelly gives us another ballhawk who can generate turnovers - and with our defensive line, there will be a lot of rushed passes to prey on.

Need the other CB to be ready. They won't be throwing at Sutton much next year. The 2015 year will have a few premier CBs(Mack Alexander, VHIII, and Sutton off the top of my head) that won't get tested much. The other guy needs to be ready because he'll be attacked.

For conversation's sake, would it be possible to move randolph or tkjr to nickel? Not a big fan of playing guys out of position but next year it seems like having all three of mcneil / tkjr / randolph on the field would be nice. Either way will have some nice depth in the middle of our secondary next year.

TK jr maybe but heck no to Randolph or McNeil. I wouldn't even put Kelly Jr there. Need a shifty corner with how good slot award are these days

None of them have man to man coverage skills nor speed to be able to do this. A 4-3 set with McNeil at LB would be more common and would work better. Not enough speed for it to work. They are pretty good at zone but man to man we would see a lot of open slot recievers.

I didn't suggest mcneil...just a thought on other two. My preference to work all three at S. Just nice to discuss having so much depth. Could easily see a 3-man rotation at safety.

Nah Gaulden will be fine there. He's tailor made for it and the CB position in general.

hopefully Gaulden puts on a little weight this off season, but he has all the skills you want in a nickel, and he isnt afraid to get physical in run support either... i have always loved his game..

a&m will make a hard run at tennessee juco cornerback commit justin martin. In fact, an offer is expected to come through later today. Before announcing for the vols, martin had lsu as his leader, but when chavis left for a&m that eliminated the tigers. A&m is trying to secure an official with the nation’s top rated juco corner for later this month and chavis is leading the charge. He will likely visit after he’s offered.

LOL, just saw this on 1st page:

"Keep an eye on this kid. Justin Martin out of Nashville Overton. Enrolled JuCo early and Tennessee helped place him. He's a 6-2 CB that has 46 second speed in the 400. Is a good candidate to be an eventual JuCo addition for the 2015 class." - Barton Simmons

Barton gets it.
