"I think he is really and truly as close to a perfect running back for the spread [offense] as you will find," Coach Stewart stated. "That's truly what he is. You know, if you are going to go fast, no huddle, up-tempo, he's definitely a space player.

"His best play is the outside zone, stretch game. He runs the counter very well, and really what sets him apart are his hands. He seldom drops balls. He's able to get to the second and third level so quickly on seam routes and angle routes out of the backfield, and you just can't find that. He has such tremendous burst and is able to get to the second level so fast. All he needs is a crease and he is gone."

The Darren Sproles comparison is a good one, but this kid is much thicker built at comparable points in their careers. To me a better comparison from a pure stature and speed standpoint might be, dare I say, the great Barry Sanders.

Sure he has the elusiveness of Barry Sanders, but that's only a small part of the package; This kid has Emmitt Smith's durability and vision, Earl Campbell's power, LaDainian Tomlinson's versatility, Chris Johnson's early career speed, Lorenzo Neal's blocking ability, Bo Jackson's overall athletic prowess, and Walter Payton's off-field altruism and humility.

"Gridiron star Kendall Bussey of Newman headlines local action this week, ripping off a 10.33-second 100 meters at the Newman Invitational in one of the nation's fastest clockings this year. He overtakes the injured Edward Davis (Karr) as the area's top short sprinter. "

Just a quick whiz in the Cheerios: Lest anyone get the wrong idea, Bussey has very good speed but not elite. The 10.33 was a hand time, and even though it went into the Newman record books as a 10.5 it should've been a 10.64. But that time is still questionable given his other performances last year, including an 11.03 at a regional meet and a 10.95 in the state meet 11 days later.

His official PRs last year, per the two definitive sources for FAT times (MileSplit & Dyestat):
55 m: 6.71
60 m: 7.13
100 m: 10.95 (state meet, finished 4th)
200 m: 22.58

A 5-foot-9, 205-pound senior, who committed to Tennessee on Friday, Bussey established himself as a genuine triple threat as a runner, receiver and kick returner by rushing for 1,240 yards and 28 touchdowns on 139 carries in addition to catching 33 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns and returning two kicks for touchdowns.

Much of that production proved critical while Newman quarterback Jay Tyler was slowed by a thumb injury.

“I think everything came together for Kendall physically,’’ Newman Coach Nelson Stewart said. “I think the most impressive thing was when we lost Jay Tyler early, he really put the team on his shoulders.

“He played the running back position at a level that we had never seen before, not just as a runner, but also as a receiver. Kendall had an unbelievable season as a totally dynamic playmaker.’’

“Peyton texted me to say he’s very happy,’’ Newman coach Nelson Stewart, a teammate of Manning’s at the Uptown school in the early 1990s, said. “The Texas A&M coaches not so much. But Peyton wanted to tell him congrats. Everybody’s all excited, all of the Newman and Tennessee people.’’

...“Kendall is as explosive of a player as we’ve had here,’’ Stewart said. “With his burst, his speed and his ability to score from anywhere on the field, he is a true multi-purpose back.

“He runs with power and speed, but he’s extremely effective in catching the football out of the backfield. He truly excels in space in one-on-one matchups. This year especially his development as a power runner and blocker are what took him to the next level.

“I think he’s as unselfish of a player as we’ve had. He was a captain. He never called for the ball. He was the consummate team guy. Even after his injury he never missed a day of practice.’’

Bussey’s injury, a slight tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, required surgery, but he is projected to be at full speed by June, Stewart said.

Some call Kendall Bussey the “Mini Bus.” Others call him “Little Bus.” But long before he picked up those nicknames, he was just mini.

So small in fact, that his mom feared for his safety when he first began playing football as a kid. “He was just such a runt and looked so funny in his uniform,” Keon Bussey recalls. “But once he got out there on the field, I could tell he was just a natural. And he was so fast.”

He’s still fast. But Bussey, a senior at Newman, is no longer skinny.
