Smith was one of several defensive linemen the coaching staff visited this week in Georgia and that included Derrick Brown, Tyler Clark and a newer name to remember, defensive tackle Michail Carter. Carter hasn't been a guy big on his recruitment to this point and while UGA, Alabama, Auburn and several others have been thought to be the leaders, Tennessee could host him next month for an official visit as he's listened to what the Vols are pitching.

with the recruitment of so many DL, is the writing on the wall for lack of development? attrition? we need OL.

FWIW, we stand to lose at least 3 DL after the 2016 season. Probably 4 since Barnett is likely to go pro.

Even if we just have 1 or two depth guys transfer out this season, we stand to be looking at a drastically different DL in 2017 than in 2016. Bringing in as much talent as possible and having them compete for reps in 2017 is probably a good idea.

I can't speak for you, but although a blown-out knee knocked me out of my attempt at walking on in college, my seven previous years of playing the sport allowed me to grasp the fact that the fellows who start every snap with a hand on the ground are sumo wrestling every single down and get gassed far faster than those of us who ran and then hit/got hit. Did you notice this, too, or did you play football...at all? Three deep at each line spot means 24 to 27 absolute studs on the OL and DL altogether...plus a few more to compensate attrition. Ask Bob Stoops or Nick Saban or Urban Meyer how they've managed to win against extremely talented teams when the going got its toughest, and I'd bet their first response would be having a full stable of linemen...both ways...is going to make the difference between championships and lower spots. Come to UT, all you beastly big uglies!

Coach Doug Mathews was also saying that Butch likes to recruit dual role players and if a DLineman can't make it on Defense, he can move to OL pretty easily because they are more athletic than your average OLineman. He thinks we should be recruiting heavy on Dlineman due to they can be moved over. We have a few examples of this already.

Tennessee also spent time with Georgia defensive lineman Michail Carter as the Vols are emerging as someone to watch with the four-star defensive tackle. While Georgia is considered the favorite by most, Tennessee is working to secure an official visit in January.

How many spots do we have in this class? It seems like we're actively recruiting 40 guys.

This is Butch cruitin, not Dooley. You recruit the best players and expect to land them all. Then you are put in the fantastic position of having to choose which ones you keep.

One player that doesn't seem to be an option anymore is Georgia defensive tackle Michail Carter. After showing some signs of interest the last few weeks he let Tennessee know they weren't much of a factor moving forward.

We will continue to try and see where Tennessee goes on the defensive line moving forward.
