The 16 most irreplaceable college football players taking the field in 2016 - CBSSports.com

15. Pitt QB Nathan Peterman: Peterman isn't the trendiest name here, but hear us out. Pitt's offense obviously goes through its ground game, but Peterman has the capability of stretching the ball downfield in the passing attack. No other quarterback not named Chad Voytik threw a pass for Pitt in 2015, and Voytik has transferred to Arkansas State. Pitt has already shown it can run the ball without James Conner -- Qadree Ollison rushed for more than 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns -- but the Panthers could be in real trouble if Peterman ever leaves the field. This is especially true if you're of the belief Pitt could be a sleeper ACC Coastal contender.

Glad he's doing much better at Pitt, but is he really considered irreplaceable?

What does that say about the #2 QB at Pitt?

In many instances, I am not too interested in what a former Vol does after he leaves the University of Tennessee and plays for another university. However, I make an exception in my interest for Nate. He is a UT grad. With a degree behind him and still having playing time and not seeing any at UT, I do not have any issues with him going elsewhere. And I wish him every success.

None of us have any issues with Nate going elsewhere; many encouraged it as a matter of fact. :) But he is not a VFL. I wish him the best and am glad he is finding success. But I agree with Butchna - this doesn't belong in "Tennessee" football.

This is perhaps the best example I've seen yet of why preseason list columns suck. They're full of completely subjective criteria and poorly supported opinions. It is stated that Pitt might be a contender in the ACC Coastal Division? Big deal. They could do that but will still only win 6 or 7 regular season games.

His diploma will always say B.S./B.A. University of Tenneseee. Hate to break it to you, but that can't be taken away and you're not the arbiter of VFL status.

Lol you're going to revoke the Vfl status of a Tennessee letterman that graduated and left in good standing. Good joke

Fournette to me is somewhat replaceable, not saying he is not good or great, but in some ways I feel the team and coaching staff think they need to feed him more than they should. Although, I think Guice is a different player than Fournette, I actually think LSU plays overall better when Guice is in the game, he is kind of a wild card. I don't think the world has seen what Guice can do yet, I think the lack of a drop off might surprise some, but not me. I don't think LSU makes the jump to the next level with Fournette with 300+ touches this year.

I kind of disagree with the Fournette at number 3 but agree it would be very hard to replace McCaffery's skill set.

The only question I have about LSU is the same one I always have. Can they be unpredictable when they throw the football? Can they make other teams, besides Alabama, pay when they crowd the line. In other words, can they pass when they want to?

Otherwise, I would say they are about 80% ready to go with Fournette.

Yea, I can't say I disagree with you at all. However, I would say unless their D significantly improves any improves by the offense probably won't matter. The worse D I have since probably pre-Saban.

They need to be committed to the pass at times, just like they are too the run. You are of course correct, its going to work against most teams but one or two trick plays is not always going to overcome a team that is similar in the physical department. LSU should benefit from a greatly weaker West for a change, the team that actually concerns me this year is the annual Florida game.

As far as Fournette, I think he is a good kid and physically he has some gifts that only come around ever 10 years, but with that said.... I actually think he is replaceable at LSU... I think the offense in general could actually be better without him... I'm actually not joking either.

If LSU is going to make a run, this is about as good as the stars line up in recent years. I don't see it happening if Fournette touches it 300+ times, some passing and running by committee better be happening or its going to be rough in the second half of the season again.

Auburn did you guys a big, big favor. They took Steele. We played against Aranda's defense last year. I believe I would go back to worrying about Cam. LSU's defense is going to be freaky fast and with Beckwith and the juniors deciding to do the smart thing this year, your D will be very good, at the very least. Early, it will be more about the 3-4 and getting your front 7 used to their new gaps and assignments.

Listen, it's embarrassing, the caliber of WR talent you guys are not using down there. Fournette makes everyone play honest in that front seven and if anyone hopes to stop that beast they will have to bring another grown man in the box. Malachi Dupree and company have one on one coverage the whole game. You mean Les can't take advantage of that? He's been stubborn.

Can someone explain how Peterman is still playing football? I mean how does he still have eligibility left?

Edit: forgot he was in the 2012 class. The grad transfer thing threw me off.

The problem is not that he will not throw the problem its that is usually a deep ball which LSU is actually pretty good at. The problem is that builds problems moving the chains on a constant basis. This last year to me was about dropped balls and penalties on the offensive side of the ball, #103 in the nation in penalty yards. I'm not sure how many were on plays that gained first downs, but some games it was just crazy how many big passing plays were wiped out by penalties.... let alone dropped balls. Let me put it this way.... LSU had bad special teams (overall probably the worse I seen since the 90s), the defense was probably the worse since the 90s, probably the most penalties I can recall.... yet they only lost 3 games, and they have 90% of the team coming back plus some freshman that are already making impacts.

This is how a typical LSU loss was handled by the commentators.... during the game.... "why are they passing they should just hand it off to #7". After the game, "why didn't they pass the ball more".

I think Fournette needs to be taken out every other series, generally, in the early part of the year. I don't think the offense needs drastic improvement, they do need to be more efficient i.e. drastically less penalties and drastically less drop balls.... LSU won't win the big games with drops and penalties, as #7 will be taken out of those games.

I think the problem is, everyone thinks #7 should get the ball every play, the solution is fairly simple... take him out. I actually would like to see Dupce at FB and Guice at TB for about 40% of the game...this opens up the playbook a little more and also teams have no idea what to expect.

The offense could basically stay the same if they eliminated the penalties/drops with an improved D and find themselves raising the trophy.

I agree with you as well about Steele, he was probably LSU's second worse hire in the last 10 years. Not good at all. I feel the door has opened for LSU, but who knows until they play..... I feel the same way about the Vols. LSU v Bama game to me is a toss up, the Florida/Wisconsin games are the wild cards this year that have me concerned.

My guess:
LSU/Bama (West)
UT/Florida (East)

Key game for Bama to me is not the LSU game, its October 15th.

Don't get me wrong, Brandon Harris wouldn't be my first choice to kick start my offense. But it is who Miles recruits, over and over. Fournette doesn't need the carries he got last year for LSU to be successful. Henry only got them because we were out of backups who had the experience to help. Keeping him fresh for the whole season is more important. I hope you enjoy this kid before he's gone. He reminds me of the times we had to play Charles "The Great" Alexander. You know, it's that in the pit of your stomach feeling.

It will probably be decided in Baton Rogue and we keep the game circled as you do. But the only door that's open in the SEC west is the one you kick open. :shades:

Did you really add that?

It's a key game, it's a bitter rival game, but it doesn't count TWO. I'm not waiting for LSU to do us the same favor that ole miss keeps insisting on. That is to lose twice if they beat us. I know LSU feels the same way.

Tennessee would rather beat us than Florida or Georgia, but all that would get them is the same seat in front of the TV during the SECCG.
