The redshirt sophomore defensive tackle from Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Ariz., said he’s scheduled to travel to Tennessee on June 18 for its “Orange Carpet Day,” and the Vols already are one of a handful of teams standing out to him.

Young, who holds more than a dozen offers, said Louisville, Nebraska and Missouri also have caught his attention. But the 2013 graduate of Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Ga., said the offer he received from Tennessee on May 14 was particularly exciting, “just because it was back home” within a short drive of the Atlanta area.

“My mom could come to my games and stuff,” said Young, who’s expected to be one of the nation’s top junior-college defensive tackles in the 2017 class.

The three-star redshirt sophomore defensive tackle from Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Ariz., said Tennessee is “definitely in my top three,” along with Alabama and Louisville, following his visit with the Vols on Saturday for their “Orange Carpet Day,” and he “definitely” plans to return there on an official visit later this year.

“They’ve been showing me a lot of love (recently), texting me and telling me how great the school is,” said Young, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 55 junior-college prospect and No. 12 juco defensive tackle in the 247Sports Composite for the 2017 class. “And since I’ve been up here, everything they’ve been saying is true. I like the campus and stuff like that. … They were already up there, but (Saturday) helped them even more, too.”

Saturday’s visit gave him an even better feel for “how the coaches are” at Tennessee, and he enjoyed spending time with Vols coach Butch Jones’ staff, including defensive line coach Steve Stripling.

“They’re the same way as we text and talk on the phone, and they kept it 100 with me,” he said. “Everything they’ve been saying is true, and they haven’t sugarcoated nothing. That’s what I like — the coaches and stuff here. Every little time we stopped, we sat down and talked and stuff like that,” Young added, referring to Stripling. “Basically, he was just telling me how things are at the school and asking me how I like the stuff. ... He don’t sugarcoat nothing. He just keeps everything straight with me. That’s what I mainly like.”

“They’re saying they’re low on D-tackles and stuff like that,” Young said. “I look at it a lot because, me coming from a juco, I’ve only got a couple more years to play. I’m not, like, a freshman coming out of high school. I look at that a lot. That’s mainly what my recruiting’s based around — looking at the roster.”

Bama offered Young on June 6th, and he plans to OV there as well.

Tennessee is seemingly in a three-way battle for junior college defensive lineman Malik Young. Alabama and Georgia join the Vols at this point and after catching up with him this week it seems like he's far from completing his recruiting process.

Since his games will be on Saturdays this fall, that leaves him little time for official visits so don't look for him to take those until after his season, likely in late November and December before signing mid year.

Kongbo was at an AZ Juco. If he has a great year, maybe when Young visits in December JK can do some recruiting as his host.

Kongbo was on the west side of the state. Malik is on the other side. I didn't even know EAC had a team. Both are 3 hours or so from Phoenix. Too far

Oh I doubt they really know each other. I'm just saying with both coming from an AZ Juco, which is not known for powerhouse programs, maybe they can make a connection when he visits Knoxville.

I wasn't referring that they knew each other. Just think it's strange how they both went to tiny schools in the middle of nowhere.

Probably just a situation where a kid was under the radar and looking for an opportunity. I'd like to see UT pick a Juco and steer their future possibilities to one school. I think we had a good position with Hutchinson CC at one time. NE Oklahoma was another one recently I thought may turn into a good option as I believe a former Vol was coaching there.

After watching that I see why so many Juco transfers end up busts. They are there for a reason in most cases. This dudes on that show were a mess

How about that player saying "can't say while the camera is rolling" when asked what else can be done to get him to sign. That coach came back quick with the "if you're talking about breaking NCAA rules, we won't be doing that".

Saw that last night when finishing it. Amazing how high they hold themselves and they aren't superstar players

Mr. Malik Young was interviewed recently by 247 Sports. He said "there is no doubt in his mind there is a favorite now coming to the top of the recruiting class for his committment decision. This school wasn't a big factor early on but in recent months they have moved up bigime. I love the coaching staff & how they've remained in contact me with me all season long in 2016. My plans have always been to wait until NSD but I'm so excited & wanting to open my mouth to my committment that I might not be able to wait to be honest. We'll see but those were my plans all along to wait until that special signing day to announce my college football committment at the next level. I will say the top 3 schools on my lists right now are different than what they were 6 months ago. The top 3 are now Louisville, UT & Bama. They are said in no particular order either. I already know which school it is for me but I still want to stick my initial committmment plans."

The staff has done a good job with his recruitment. They've shown him the necessry love and our dire need for DT's. He sees almost immediate playing time, plus being from Marietta, his Mother can see him play. I'd say he's ours to lose. Regardless of Bama and UGa. We've been consistant in his recruitment.

Would be nice to land this kid. Ideally, we'll bring in 2 DTs who can crack the rotation year one in 2017.

Alexis Johnson seeming to be an uncertainty at this point and the injuries our DTs have dealt with almost makes that a necessity.

Agreed...even before the injuries I thought we needed one JUCO or HS DT that could play right away...now I think it's two with at least one being a JUCO...this guy fits that mold IMO

Yes, I believe we need this guy even more now than before seeing that he hopefully would bring Immediate help as a DT.

It's now Bama & Louisville along with LSU as his top 3. He hasn't said anything about opening his recruitment back up beyond these 3 schools so Georgia would be out now.

I did say Louisville & Bama in my previous post. I guess you just missed it or was assuming Georgia because they were seriously in play not more than 2-3 months ago. Thanks!
