It's been about 17 months since Hamilton "resigned." I was beyond happy to see him go. He had presided over the decline of athletics at The University of Tennessee too long. He was touted for hiring Bruce Pearl but that was all Ernie Grunfeld's selection and Hamilton allowed that to turn into a Royal Mongolian Wesson Oil Party. He screwed up the baseball program. He screwed up the football program. Fortunately he was excluded from the women's side by Joan Cronan, who eventually took over for him as interim AD.
Hamilton was touted as a "great fundraiser" but managed to leave the athletic program on the brink of financial disaster. Neyland Stadium was reconfigured to eliminate seats in favor of empty ego sections. If less seats were needed, then more butt room would have been nice!
A few months after he left, Dave Hart was announced as the new AD in Sep 2011. I honestly did not know what to expect. For the next year plus, I grew frustrated and impatient. He let Dooley swing on the end of a very short rope for what I felt was too long. I believed that he should have either given him more public support or let him go. In recent weeks, the frustration grew. I wondered if there was even a plan, something that I had really despised about Hamilton -- the lack of a plan.
Suddenly, Hart seems to have moved into action. His moves look to be well rooted in a plan! There is a plan to restore financial stability. There is a plan to find the RIGHT coach. There is even a plan to remove Dooley without shredding whatever dignity the man has left. I think my stress level is lower! I have moved from the frustrated side to the thrilled side in days. I am anxious to move forward for a change. The light at the end of the tunnel is not a train coming at me!
