From Stewart Mandel, "Tennessee coach Butch Jones expects to play as many as 18 true freshmen in the Vols opener against Austin Peay on Saturday. That total includes Cam Sutton, who will start at cornerback."

Unlike Dooley, hopefully they won't all be on the field at the same time.

Georgia ready to turn page, TCU plays it close to vest; Overtime - College Football - Stewart Mandel - SI.com

This was news to me, but maybe it's already been discussed ad nauseam. It's good for recruiting to say that you can come in and play as a freshman, while unfortunate for our depth that we have to resort to it. Anybody going to redshirt this year?

From Nashvol2

"I think you'll see

Malik Foreman
Cam Sutton
Devon Swafford
Josh Smith
Marquez North
Dylan Weisman
Paul Harris
Ryan Jenkins

Possibly
Jason Carr
Riley Ferguson
Jaylen Miller
Malik Brown
Josh Dobbs
Lemond Johnson"

Anyone else I should add or subtract from this list?

Should be interesting to say the least.

I think he mentions it in the "insider look to CBJ first fall camp" or something like that.

I laughed.

I think it was mentioned somewhere but I think it bears discussing. I agree that it's great for recruits, but there will be some definite growing pains this year because of the youth. I think one of the positives you can take is that most of those freshmen are 2nd team or lower. Cam Sutton and Marquez North are the only two "starters." Paul Harris might be, but all three of those guys are obviously really talented. We also have a lot of upperclassmen on the lines which is where I think it is most critical.

My God will this depth issue ever go away?!?!?!?!

The fact that we have one or are you tired of hearing it? If you're tired of hearing it, you'll need to take a break because it's been an issue for some years and it will continue at least for another one to two.

I know he is not a true freshman, but how much time are you guys expecting from Danny O'Brien?

It is good to see them play that many - says we got some talent in the wings - as long as few a starting and most are no higher than 3's

Tennessee is probably the only SEC school where 18 true freshman would be able to see playing time immediately. Vol fans can now understand the problems facing coach Jones and the football program. In several years we should be able to greatly improve our talent and depth so that we can indeed compete with the top SEC teams. As hard as it is to do, Vol fans must be patient and give coach Jones time to level the playing field.

Not if we keep hiring new coaching staffs. Although, I'm pretty impressed with the lack of attrition under CBJ. Losing bad apples is not nearly as bad as losing players upset with the change in direction.

We have yet to recover from the Fulmer for Kiffin swap, then the Kiffin for Dooley swap. Actually, Dooley's first class was very impressive IMO from the position that he was placed in. Probably his best work in the overall failure.

Even if Jones does not have us winning championships in 3 years, we really need to hang onto the guy for 4 or 5 to get this problem eradicated. He will have to be an on field disaster to be gone in 3 IMO. His track record and early results tell me this will not be the case.

Not 18 freshman, we now have a real coach, now we need some coaching stability that players can count on, UT has been a coaching nightmare now for 5 years
