Since we're posting the big recruiting wins of the past, thought I'd post this from 1994. This class (which included some guy named Peyton Manning) was ranked #1 by most recruiting services at the time.

Tennessee Harvest Top Crop

Butch Jones hasn't quite reached this level yet, but for the past year, I've thought the excitement around the program now is similar to the early Fulmer years. We don't have to have a #1 class to win the SEC, but here's to hoping we see a lot more top 5 classes (and maybe even a #1 class) from Butch Jones in the future.

My take is the key component in that 1994 class is the QB. We don't necessarily have to have another Manning, but we MUST get a stud QB. I like our QB's and Dormady, but in order to beat the best (consistently), we need the stud QB.

You are right to a degree but our stud qb just could not get us the big one. I think our system may be a little different now where having a mobile qb that can make a play with his arms or legs will make us tough. Recruiting will have to get us solid teams, a beasty d, and lines that can bulldoze with a heavy dose of elite specialists. Only the SECw has that one IMO.

Don't remember Anthony Hampton playing.

Jarvis Reado was serviceable but certainly was not the best lineman on the team. Didn't even get a Free Agent contract with any NFL team.

Maurice Staley was good but he was smoking pot in his room and set off the fire sprinkler system, so Fulmer let him go.

Jarvis was really good. Had some injury problems. He was fun to watch and a really nice person.

The first two lines from that article: "Philip Fulmer has been the head coach at Tennessee for just one year, so the jury may still be out on his coaching ability. But it looks like the guy can recruit." :question:

Sounds really similar to someone but I can't quite put my finger on it! Biggest difference is Fulmer inherited Majors team which was already loaded. CBJ inherited a dumpster fire and beat a top 5 team with them! He is a great coach and a great recruiter!

Classes are ofern viewed by the qb's that are signed... Should look at other pieces as many times they win championships unless you have the ultimate difference maker coming in

I'd argue last year's class was the best ever for us on paper. We've never brought in a class that large with 0 players getting a scholarship just to fill the space. Butch brought in guys he's confident will play big roles.

Got a good chuckle out of the part of that article where the author says Peyton Manning might not even be the best QB in the recruiting class.

He said "might". So you gotta givem him a pass.

BS had a lot of PT too as a true freshman. Stewart was more mobile. Manning more polished. PM of course became the man. But BS transferred and played pretty well at TAMU. I'll always be grateful for him helping us to the BCSNCG in 98' VFL baby! LOL.

Maybe most important in a long time (forever?). We were/are desperate for quality bodies. #1 class (on paper) in nation IMO, as far as our quantity was concerned.
With where we are, Butch hit a grand slam in the 9th inning last year. Looks to be following it again this year. Wow.

also the other highly talented recruits in the article were washouts except for Marcus Nash.

Dormady could be that QB. But, I agree with you, we have to get better QB play than we got last year to really move forward.

Brandon Stewart played really well his freshman year. He showed loads of potential. Peyton was not head and shoulders above him at at that point IMO.

Who knows what would have happened if Stewart had stayed at Tennessee. Maybe Manning leaves early and Stewart lights it up his senior season. We will never know.
