Had Tennessee lost to the hogs on that rainy November saturday, would we still have been able to play in the Fiesta Bowl for the National Championship, assuming we won the SEC Championship Game?

We were the only undefeated team (besides Tulane), so would a one-loss Vols had made it in 1998?

I think we would have still made it with UCLA losing to Miami and KSU losing to Texas A&M at the very end of the season. However, I am not convinced that if we lost to Arkansas we would have been able to beat them when we faced them in the SECCG. Had they beaten us they would have went to the SECCG instead of Miss. St.

Maybe because if you had lost to us in that game, you would have played us again in the SEC title game.

We would have probably been undefeated and #1 in the country. We lost to Miss. State the week after losing to Tenn. We just couldn't get back up. Then we hammered LSU.

So if you had knocked us off in the SECCG then you prolly would have gone to the Fiesta Bowl.

Tend to agree with you. Beating the team that beat you in a 3-week turnaround, and having that team ranked #1 in the nation would have spoken volumes about us being the best 1-loss team in the country.

The question then becomes, would UCLA and KSU have choked knowing they were shoo-ins for the title game if they stayed undefeated?

I don't know. One of those what-if type situations. We won it all so thats what matters right?lol :p

(By the way Bobby Dodd, where do you live in presidential court?)

Ohio State probably would have gotten in instead.

Ohio State was 4th in the BCS that season. Kansas State was a distant 3rd behind Florida State and UCLA was 5th. If Kansas State can lose and drop no further than #3, then the Vols could easily have dropped only to #2.

Arkansas' loss to Miss State was legit. MSU was good that season. Regarding Arkansas' blowout of LSU.... who cares, they finished 4-7.

If the Vols had lost to Arkansas in the regular season matchup, I have no doubt the Vols would win the rematch. Travis Henry rushed for 197 yards in the game and the Vols outscored the Hogs 18-3 in the 2nd half.

You won't find it on any Razorback website that's for sure. It still stings the same as it did 8 years ago. I have the picture of Stoerner, I like to call him Stoernover, as my background on my computer. Just to piss me off. :jpshakehead:
