People in Nashville are already grumbling, probably because this seems like something useful while we all know that our new convention center will never live up to billing. It seems that the recent Nashville mayors all fancy themselves ceasars who must have huge publicly funded edifices to commemorate their time in office.

Have heard from several Economic Development people that the Gigcity is definitely a positive for business growth.

Have they even seen anything that suggest this yet? Seems like an enormous price to pay for business growth, especially when you consider how that money could be used in other infrastructure and not at a cost of basically eliminating competition.

Chatty is able to do the faster internet thing because it was part of the deal to get Volkswagen, I believe.

Having gigabit speed internet would be huge for Nashville, especially with the video and music industry.

Brent Skorup consistently downplays the power held by the ISPs and has refuted they take actions such as throttling. It comes as no surprise he's trying to discredit what is a muni broadband success story in Chattanooga. The market needs more competition, be it public or private options. The ISPs are operating under a mini-monopoly and are blocking competition and innovation through their powerful lobby. There is anti-competition legislation in multiple states/localities. There are customers outside the Chattanooga metro area who want the public broadband but legislation is in place to block expansion.

The FCC needs to preempt the anti-competitive legislation as a first step to improving the broadband market for consumers.
