DECATUR, Ga. -- The DeKalb County police department is investigating two officers who have been accused of running a criminal background check on President Barack Obama.

County public safety director William Miller said in a prepared statement Wednesday that the officers have been put on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The officers' names were not released.

Miller said the police department was notified by the U.S. Secret Service that DeKalb County computers were used to run a query on Obama. He did not say what investigators believe was the officers' motive.

Miller said the officers' behavior will "not be tolerated" by the county.
I wonder what they found? I would like to see Obama's FBI file myself.

Well, I find it funny that the FBI would be watching whether or not someone ran an NCIC query on Obama. There are NCIC rules that state that you must be running an active investigation or someone has to be arrested before you run any criminal history requests for that person. That rule applies for everyone. IMO, the most punishment they could get would be suspension. The penalties for that violation are not that strict. Most of the time they just tell you not to do it again but they keep a closer eye on any other query you submit to NCIC.

They can be fined and imprisoned. I'm GCIC certified here and we have to take a "Security and Integrity" class every year. In that class they talk about misuse and what could happen.

They bring up several stories about people being fired, but never fined or jailed. Most cases involve looking up the wifes new husband or boyfriend or looking up the pretty girl you just met.

Glad to hear the Secret Service is on the job. I bet the technology at that level is almost unimaginable.

After 28 years in one job,(it moved to Mexico) my wife finally found a new job as a police dispatcher. She began training at the end of May. One of the very first things that she came home and told me about was looking up something on Obama. She was warned against it so I can only assume that this is why. She even said that they also viewed home computers.

Just a minute! Who's that at my door????

A guy did an Accurint search for George W Bush at a mortgage company I worked at. The FBI contacted his boss and he was axed the question immediately. Very stupid.

Oddly, he also did a check on Deana Carter of all people.

We have had a few people get arrested for this in the last few years. One was about four years ago when an off duty officer was having tags run on his ex-wife's boyfriend. He was fined, and lost his POST certification. Our last S&I class I think they said that the punishment can be up to 5 years in prison and 50k in fines.

That sounds about right. I couldn't remember exactly. Being fired and losing POST is bad enough IMO.

Yeah since you consider with that record there goes ANY chance of a job in law enforcement ever again. I think our officer had been doing it for 15-20 years between a few departments. Hard to believe people would throw that all away over something as stupid as that.

Philly Police Officer Accused of Running Background Check on Obama
Philadelphia police confirmed that they are investigating a 5-year veteran of the force accused of attempting to run a criminal background check on President Obama.

Philadelphia police and apparently federal authorities are investigating an officer accused of attempting to run a criminal background check on President Obama, a FOX News affiliate has learned.

Sgt. Ray Evers confirmed that the police are investigating a 5-year veteran of the force but would not identify the officer.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning, one day after Obama's 48th birthday, the FOX News affiliate learned.

The attempt set off some kind of early warning system in police dispatch, which notified the officer's captain, Evers said.

It's unclear what information might have been sought during the attempted record check.

Last month, two DeKalb County, Ga., police officers were accused of running a criminal background check on the president. Officials said both officers were put on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
