Jalen Berger made the most of his spring break last week by hitting the road to visit a handful of the 20 colleges that already have extended scholarship offers to him. He decided to include a stop at Tennessee. The four-star Class of 2020 athlete from Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey, N.J., traveled to Tennessee on Friday during a four-day trip that allowed him to see four different schools, and he said his first look at the Vols surpassed his expectations.
I wasn't expecting the campus to be so big and the facilities to be as great as they were, said Berger, whos ranked by 247Sports as the No. 105 overall prospect and No. 8 athlete in the 2020 class. I wasnt expecting that, because I dont know too much about Tennessees football, except for, like, (former Vols running back) Alvin Kamara, of course. I never really thought about Tennessee at all until I got the offer, and I just wanted to check it out.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Berger said he also visited Penn State on April 4, Florida on April 5 before stopping at Tennessee, and he ended the trip with a visit to Kentucky on Saturday. Berger said getting a firsthand look at the Vols facilities, including Neyland Stadium, was the highlight of his trip to Tennessee. It was amazing, he said. Walking around the stadium, it was amazing. Their stadium holds 100,000 people. Just playing in front of that many people is just amazing.
Coach Osovet, hes always staying on top of me, Berger said. Im 2020, so he cant really call me. But Ill call him every other week because he likes to have conversations with me to build a good relationship. During his visit to Tennessee, he said new Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt and Osovet sat down with me for about an hour, just talking about the running backs they have now and the opportunities he could have playing as a true freshman there.
He was talking about ways they can get me the ball either move me out (to) wide receiver, running back, direct snaps, Berger said. Tennessee primarily is recruiting him, he said, to play running back. They want me at running back, but theyll motion me out at wide receiver, throw the ball just find different ways to get me the ball, he said, adding that most teams are discussing the same type of role.
Berger said hes now thinking about stopping by at a game to see Tennessee again later this year and experience the game-day atmosphere in Knoxville. Florida also impressed Berger enough during last weeks trip to make him want to visit the Gators again to attend one of their games. Im planning to go back to Florida soon, he said. Ill probably stop by a game when they play LSU. He said hes thinking about going to Ohio States spring game this weekend. Beyond that, he said he doesnt have any additional visits planned.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. Jalen Bergers 20 scholarship offers come from the top programs in the ACC, Big Ten and SEC. Due to proximity the class of 2020 New Jersey product was able to visit many of the ACC and Big Ten schools early in his recruitment, but recently he has started to check some of the SEC programs off his list.
Two weeks ago I went to Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky," Berger said. "I left feeling really positive about every school I visited. I am trying to take visits (to) every school that offered me just to get a feel for every school.
The SEC tour coincided with Bergers high school spring break, and gave him a chance to see the climate extremes, starting with a stop in the Sunshine State to see Dan Mullens Florida Gators. They have a New Jersey running back, Iverson Clement, down there, Berger noted. He took me in, showed me around and it was a great experience. I know the weather is definitely better. When I came back from Florida it was snowing in Jersey.
Making his way further north, Berger met with another first-year head coach in Tennessees Jeremy Pruitt. I sat down with (Pruitt) for about an hour and we just talked about the running backs they have now and me coming in as a freshman I could possibly play, Berger said.
The longest-tenured staff Berger saw on his SEC tour was Kentuckys, but this is where Mother Nature started to wreak havoc on his experience. I didnt really get to meet a lot of the coaches because it was snowing that day and they pretty much cancelled everything, Berger said. I just toured the facilities and they have great facilities. I didnt know they had facilities like that.
Since his spring break trip, Berger was able to make stops at Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. He has no future visits dates scheduled, but wants to get back to SEC territory soon. If I were to make a visit it would be to LSU and Alabama just because they are schools I havent visited yet and want to get out there, Berger said. Although Berger has already visited many of the schools that have offered him, he does not plan to make his college selection until senior year.
ramsey (n.j.) don bosco athlete jalen berger spent april making a bunch of visits, and since then he relaxed and pulled back a bit from the recruiting process. However, the no. 4 athlete in the industry-generated 247sports composite, said he remains in contact with florida, tennessee, ohio state and rutgers more than other schools.
Rutgers already sits in a very good spot for him. its definitely a place that is going to be one of my top choices, berger said. if i came to rutgers, it is close to home and my parents could see me play all the time. They would not have to spend money for flights to go and watch me play all the time.
one of the coaches berger speaks with the most is florida assistant sal sunseri. The two hit it off during berger's april visit to campus. hes a great guy, berger said. the first day i met him, i knew i was going to have a great relationship with him. Its the way he talks. When we are on the phone, he talks like hes known me for years. It makes me feel comfortable.the campus also made an impact with berger. it was amazing, he said. its the facilities, and the people there are all happy. The players accepted me. They talked to me, we watched film.
tennessees joe osovet, who works in player development, is also building a relationship with berger and his family. Berger visited campus in april as well. they made me feel comfortable, berger said. coach oz, my mother can call him any time and he answers. She called him (friday) and talked to him for a while. the look of the campus also surprised berger. i wasnt expecting it to be so big and the facilities are outstanding, he said. they are getting a lot of good commitments, so theyre definitely rebuilding.
ohio state is also heavily involved with berger. Former teammate tyler friday signed with the buckeyes in february, and defensive coordinator greg schiano recruits the school hard. (friday) texts me every day about coming there, berger said. my mom is planning to visit. I have a family reunion in ohio coming up, so im going to be there anyway. Ill definitely get down there.
when berger camped at rutgers on june 1, ohio state was there and schiano and coach urban meyer made sure to spend time watching him, and speaking with him. first time i talked to (schiano), he was telling me to keep my grades up. Not that my grades are bad, berger said. (meyer) also told me about grades and to stay focused. He wants me to take another visit there.
