It's a ways off, but the teams have been announced for this star-studded high school basketball tournmanet in my hometown. The tournament features a few of the nation's best teams competing against the best teams of Oregon.
Last year saw some thrilling games:
Nationally ranked, defending California state champs Fairfax suffering a first round loss to Westview High School of Beaverton Oregon (Westview barely made Oregon playoffs that year)
The Jefferson High School Democrats of Portland defeated nationally-ranked Montrose Christian Academy of Maryland in the second round. The Democrats then went on to face the mighty Oak Hill Academy the round after. The game was a thriller, which saw Oak Hill make a last minute surge to win.
The tournament has also seen a lot of young talent come through, including Carmelo Anthony in '01 and Tyson Chandler in '00 as well as numerous other McDonald's High School All-Americans.
Although this year does not feature semi-regulars Oak Hill Academy, it does have three teams ranked on USA Today's Super 25.
Westchester High School from Los Angeles will be here. They have won three California state championships in their division in the last four years. They are ranked #2 behind Oak Hill on the USA Today Super 25.
Brother Martin High School from New Orleans. Brother Martin just recently won their 5th 5A state title and is ranked #4 on the USA Today Super 25.
Jesuit High School of Portland. The Crusaders are coming of a 28-1 state championship season. They are ranked #22 on the USA Today Super 25.
Other teams include:
The Lake Oswego Lakers from Lake Oswego, Oregon. The Lakers lost to Jesuit High School in the 4A State Championship game last season, but are returning with 6'8" Junior Kevin Love, who is ranked by Scout.com as the number 3 overall prospect in the class of 2007.
The freakishly tall Westview Wildcats from Beaverton Oregon. The Wildcats feature 5 players on their roster that are 6'5" or taller, including 7'0" (you heard me) sophomore Andy Poling. Poling was recorded at 6'11" midway through his freshman season and is expected to be as tall as 7'2" by the time he graduates.
There is some info about the tournament. It doesn't actually happen until December, but I plan on attending it and covering the action for all you folks here that pay attention to basketball recruiting.
