I'm sure this has come up before, but what is up with schools like UGA and USC already loading up on commits for the 2009 class? Maybe the UTK staff needs to cancel any and all vacation plans and keep their noses to the grindstone?

Without a doubt the "snooze or lose" factor is becoming more and more apparent in college football as well. Though I don't know that it will ever get to the same point as it is in basketball, it is certainly favoring that direction.

Tennessee will definitely have to use the 2008 football season to shove itself back into the collective conscience of the college football world. Whether you like it or not this program is an afterthought to the media and fans of other programs alike. When that changes, recruits will take notice.

The Chattanooga paper has an article about it... All three are from Georgia. They more than likely have dreamed of playing for UGA since they were 5.

The deal is that Ga routinely produces about 3-4 times as many 4-5* players than Tn. This year there are 22 4-5* recruits in Ga vs 5 in Tn (none are 5*). Florida has 48. Alabama has 16. SC has 12. Mississippi has 8. La has 11. Ark has 5. Ky has 2.

It is a two edged sword. Tn doesn't produce the kind of players to keep UT in elite contention. But if you go outside rather than taking the good players but not great instate players, you lose the HS relationship. UT goes outside and loses instate players.

Arkansas takes alot of instate 2* and 3* players and that helps them get the higher ranked players... but like Tn, Arkansas doesn't produce many.

Either way, you lose when your state doesn't produce great HS players.

Worse yet for UT, the most talent rich area of the state is probably around Memphis... which might as well be California at times. There seems to be very little UT loyalty there.

The state of Tennessee is going to have more talent then usual in 2009.
are you talking about the 2009 signing class or kids who will be Srs. in 2009 (the 2010 signing class)? And where will they hail from (i.e. will they be easy signs for UTK or battleground areas like Shelby Co. is and the Nashville area seems to be turning into)?

The 2009 signing class is a little more talented than normal but a lot is west TN.

Keep em away from Arkansas and we should be ok. Don't have a lot of time to look at rosters, what needs will have to be met for next years class?

Needs to be met = Leader on and off the field to encourage players to stay out of trouble and do their best.

Seriously hoping Berry can step up to fill this void for the Defense, but we still need someone on the Offense.

Well put. With all the off-field stuff going on we need someone to step up and lead both on offense and defense. Who do you see as the best candidates?

Agree. Count on Berry. He'll keep the D in order.

If Crompton emerges as expected, isn't he the type of guy who will naturally do that for the O-side?

I'm not sure I like Crompton. Could we put a younger guy with more potential in and let him begin his learning curve without a significant drop off? I've seen Crompton but not so much of the other QB's. Any info?

Not good. Im already worried about losing Marlon Brown to USC. I think they offered him last week.

I read that article and I think it is accurate on several points. With the new era of elite prospects, and many sub-elite prospects, committing very early the ability to close strong is almost moot because there isn't going to be anyone left to close on unless you are a complete snake oil salesman who can convince kids to silently decommit and then sign with you come NSD.
