Fed is the favorite here, obviously, but this is a strong field. Roddick, Murray, Nadal, Del Potro, Querrey, et al can all make a run at it. Helluva good way to pass the time waiting for our Vols first kickoff, in my opinion.
My sentimental favorite on the men's side, Chase Buchanan, trying to hang in there against Jo-Willie after losing the first at love. He reminds me a bit of Fabrice Santoro - a lot of heart in a small package.
American Jesse Witten went into today'a match with a 0-5 career record. His opponent - 29 seed Igor Andreev. Witten won in straights at 4,0, and 2.
I asked Greg Garber from ESPN a question during the live chat today about Jesse Witten. Here's the q and a:
Me: Jesse Witten? Really? From the set score, he looks like he lit it up. Did you get a chance to see him play?
Greg Garber: Russ: There were whispers that Andreev was injured, but you can't take anything away from Witten. I wrote a story on Witten that should be up within the hour. Today he made more money (31K) than he's made all year. Told me he seriously considered quitting earlier this year when he was playing $10K Futures events.
Good for Jesse. I'm glad for him. He's got Maximo Gonzalez next, who's record thus far this year is 10-11. It would be nice if he could take that one, as well.
Also, Sharapova needs to play with a shock collar on. The best part about her matches is you can close your eyes and pretend you are stabbing her...lulz...
I guess because neither stand a chance of winning the tourney. But it's funny what they do decide to broadcast. We miss some great matches because they broadcast whomever is the biggest audience draw, whether it's a blowout or not...
I've been wondering where bill is, myself. I don't know what's up with Ana. I think you may be right with her losing confidence. It's a shame, really.
You might find this interview from yesterday interesting.
"...Q. Is it possible you could be thinking about it too much?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I think I've been thinking about everything too much and trying to address lots of issues with my game, and at the moment I feel like I have a plan in place and I know what I have to do in each area of my game. But just at the moment I think it's a little disbalanced. My fitness is at one level, mind at another, my game is at another level. I think these all these things have to marry to get into the right direction and have to fit.... "
Gael Monfils sends a message to the field that he is not to be overlooked. 27 winners to only 12 unforced errors in his win against his countryman, Chardy. He looks poised to make a big move.
