In these grades, I will attempt to dissect why we took the prospect, how they relate to our program, and what I believe their potential could be while here at UT.

DE

Martaze Jackson

  • Grade - C
  • How he relates to UT - This is a guy who can probably put on 20-30 pounds and not lose a step. Will probably be a tweener DE/OLB.
  • Potential - This guy looks good on film, but I trying to determine his worth or potential is a shot in the dark at best.
Corey Miller

  • Grade - A+
  • How he relates to UT - It's been a long time since we have had a dominate DE, and I believe this is our guy. Will start by his sophomore year.
  • Potential - This guy has the ability to be the most dominate D-Lineman since Albert Haynesworth.
Jacques Smith

  • Grade - A-
  • How he relates to UT - I would be willing to bet that he may never play a down as a D-Lineman. Too much upside as a OLB, IMO.
  • Potential - Depending on where he ends up, Jac will either be a force as an OLB or an average DE.
DT

John Brown

  • Grade - A (if he makes it academically), otherwise an F.
  • How he relates to UT - He's the only DT prospect in this class, so, if he shows up and has the grades, this guy is going to be pretty good.
  • Potential - Never contributed at Florida, but has all the tools of a great DT. Just needs to keep his head on straight.
LB

Raiques Crump

  • Grade - C
  • How he relates to UT - He's one of those players that is just a hard worker. We need more of those on the Hill.
  • Potential - I think that this guy could be a great player, he just has to work his tail off to get there.
John Propst

  • Grade - B
  • How he relates to UT - Very smart player, and we need that at the MLB position.
  • Potential - I think this guy has dominate MLB written all over him. He just has to work hard and he will be there. Seems to be very natural on the field.
CB/S

Dave Clark

  • Grade - B+
  • How he relates to UT - Dennis Rogan's replacement. Nuff said.
  • Potential - Will come in and play right away. Won't shy away from a hit, and has great feet.
Eddrick Loften

  • Grade - A-
  • How he relates at UT - He's a hard hitting safety that will more than likely redshirt. Probably Eric Berry's replacement for the foreseeable future.
  • Potential - If he qualifies, he's going to be good. A natural ball hawk and a hitter. I like this guy.
Dontavis Sapp

  • Grade - C-
  • How he relates to UT - He's going to redshirt and learn the system. No immediate playing time, IMO.
  • Potential - This guy intrigues me. He has the potential to fill out and play safety around his junior year and be dominate with the right coaching. Height is also something that makes this guy interesting.
Marcques Dixon

  • Grade - B
  • How he relates to UT - Another guy that is going to redshirt, IMO. Needs to put on some weight.
  • Potential - Has the potential to start in a few years. Very quick feet and will be a return specialist by next season, IMO.
Kicker

Michael Palardy

  • Grade - A++
  • How he relates to UT - He's a Colquitt in disguise. I really like this kid and think he starts from Day 1, doing it all in the kicking game.
  • Potential - Sky's the Limit. This is probably the most can't miss prospect in the class.
I give the overall defensive class a C+. Some decent grades in there, but as a unit and at the DT position, they are lacking just a bit.

The overall grade of our class is a Solid B.

Now, it's time to coach 'em up.

Well dang if a top 10 class is a B, then I'd hate to be Georgia, South Carolina, Ole Miss or even Arkansas right now.

Had we had some more DT's, I would have given it an A-. Too many holes up front though to do that. I give Dooley an A+ though for the job he did in keeping the class together.

Well I think you're right in terms of needs being filled - but if you gave it a grade solely on talent I would think it would be a bit higher - but since you're basing it off that - I see where you're coming from.

I'm not buying Jacques only being an average DE if he sticks there. Otherwise, seems like good stuff. Really wish we had gotten JC like everyone else does.

He's not able to really keep weight on his frame consistently. He would make an excellent OLB with his size. I just don't think he could break blocks well enough to be a truly effective DE.

We'll see. I agree that he could be a good OLB if we need it, but he is already almost as big as rising seniors Ben Martin and Corey Walker as a freshman.

Only one or two even close to negative comments in those grades. If that's too negative for you, then you might not make it around here, and we are the most positive site around regarding the Vols.
You gona run me off? I think Not...It just gets old seeing Guys Like You post how this guy will be good this one bad when Our coach him self can't even answer that question. Heck I'm happy we got who we did and I think they are all gona be great! If I didn't I wouldn't be much of a fan.

I agree. Time will tell. If you have followed UT for awhile you know that just having the stars doesn't mean you will make it. Biran Darden for those that remember was a 5 star never made it. I think CDD did a good job with the time he had. Now let's see what the coaching staff can do. You can win with 3 and 4 stars with the right coaching. I say we say congrats on the signing class now show us how you can coach them up.

Your right, I have no clue who's going to be good and bad. I do, however, have what I have read and seen on films to base that off of. Therefore, it's more of an educated guess, based off of what I know and have seen. So, if you don't want to step out on a limb, don't start criticizing those that do. It's like trying to give relationship advice and not ever being in one to start with.

Wonder what current DE's we could bulk up and move inside? somebody is going to have to move...we can't roll into the season with 3 DT.
