I hope this will evolve into a general discussion thread on the SEC's Quarterbacks throughout the 2011-2012 season.
List the projected starters for each SEC team in order from best to worst based on how you expect them to perform this coming season.
I will get us started.
Yep, the three top quarterbacks are from SEC EAST. The SEC WEST still has the better teams though.
1. Stephen Garcia (South Carolina) - Note: Maybe it is that he gets to throw to Jeffery, Ace, and possibly Lattimore/Ellington distracting d-coordinators into cheating into the box. I could be wrong but many of Garcia bad games where on the road. He and the Gamecocks seem to feed off the atmosphere in Williams-Brice and they will get more games than usual there this year. Only thing is that Spurrier may look to give Connor Shaw more game snaps and maybe even work in a few snaps to a wildcock QB (Gilmore, Ellington...). Will Garcia have the discipline to stay out of the doghouse though?
2. Tyler Bray (Tennessee) - For all his brash attitude, the kid can chuck the bean. His experience last year, the work this off-season and his own stable of WRs lead by Rodgers and Hunter will help him put up huge numbers this year.
3. Aaron Murray (Georgia) - He was great in his first season as a starter but he will be without A.J. Green this year. His experience tailbacks are also gone. He will have to weather this season. I had him at number one just based off of the throws and decisions he made last season but he is going to have some significant roadblocks in his way this year.
4. Chris Relf (Mississippi State) - Team has good receaivers and Relf can move with his feet. He, like Bray and Murray, is on the Davey O'Brien watch list.
5. A.J. McCarron (Alabama) - Big and accurate passer in his first year as the starter. He played in every game last year behind McElroy, he has a huge line, and has great runningbacks who will preoccupy defenses. I think he will be the breakout newcomer at this position.
6. Jordan Jeffries (LSU) - He will probably split time with someone again this year. Likely Jarret Lee again...but maybe even Mettenberger
7. Tyler Wilson (Arkansas) - Will get every opportunity to succeed in Petrino's proven system.
8. John Brantley (Florida) - I know he had a terrible year by Florida's standards but he gets to try a system better suited to his abilities this year. He didn't look to hot in this year's spring game so Florida has a lot to worry about. Is Demps gone from the team? It will be a down year (again) for Florida.
9. Barrett Trotter (Auburn) - In truth he is ranked here because Auburn is better than the teams that are left but they will be Dyer's team.Even then, they also will have a different O-Line from 2010. The QB may be running for his life. Trotter is just expected to not make too many mistakes anything else he provides is a great bonus (to an outsider's view...I am sure Auburn fans expect a lot more).
10. Morgan Newton (Kentucky) - Will get a lot of snaps because Kentucky has no other options. Newton has experience in starting 8 games in 2009 and he has little pressure as the number two guy is a true freshman. Kentucky will not win many games this season and Newton will be in passing situations in many of Kentucky's contests.
11. Nathan Stanley (Ole Miss) - Kind of the opposite of the Kentucky situation inthat Ole Miss has about six QBs on the roster. Stanley and Masoli have the experience.
12. Larry Smith (Vanderbilt) - He is keeping the spot as a Senior but Rodgers will get half the snaps for Vanderbilt. Also, it is Vanderbilt.
This is how I see it well before Fall Practice.
Something that means Nothing: SEC QB as last two BCS champions Greg McElroy (Alabama) and Cam Newton (Auburn) were in their first seasons as SEC starting QBs.
