Here are the next five inductees for the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

1. David Pearson
2. Bobby Allison
3. Lee Petty
4. Ned Jarrett
5. Bud Moore

Who was a lock? Who is a surprise? Who was left out? Let the debate begin...

I wonder if they realized that after 5 or 6 years that they will begin to run low on candidates... Hut Stricklin will be in by 2020, rbroyles headlines the 2024 Class.

I'd absolutely love to hear the argument that says Bobby Allison, Lee Petty, and Ned Jarrett should go in ahead of Darrell Waltrip & Cale Yarborough as drivers. Not that those three aren't Hall worthy, because they are, but... ahead of DW and Cale?

Never would've guessed Moore would make it in this fast either.

Pearson was a lock. He should have been in the first class IMO. Lee Petty wasn't surprising, and neither was Ned Jarrett really. But Allison and Moore were. Nothing against Allison, but when I heard his name the first thing I thought was "Why not Darrell Waltrip?" They have the same number of wins (Allison argues that), and Waltrip has two more championships. But I'm glad they put a crew chief/owner in there amongst all the drivers. Waltrip and Cale Yarbourgh should be locks for next year.

None of these are a surprise as far as being in the HOF, but Bud Moore truly surprises by going in ahead of so many. He did start as a driver, then became a successful owner, winning two Champs I believe. I would have bet serious money that the next owner would be either Childress or Hendrick. Surprising to a lesser extent, but a surprise to me was Bobby Allison and Ned Jarret this early too. I expected DW and most likely Yarborough to be in this class, depending on if they voted in any of the pioneers of the sport like Tim Flock, Herb Thomas, Red Byran, Lee Petty, Buck Baker et al. I would like to see one or two of the early guys make each class so they don't get forgotten.

I can see your point on all but Lee Petty. He was the first to approach auto racing as a business in Nascar. He was a darned good driver, fielded the best prepared cars, brought many innovations to the sport (window net and extra driver's side bars as well as the windshield bar are some). Keep in mind he was the boss behind Petty Enterprises when Richard was winning most of those 200 races. I had him in this class for sure.

I fear that too many people though ignorance of the pioneers of the sport will push for more recent drivers eventually leading to some deserving induction be left out.

Five or six years equals 25-30 inductees. I can easily come up with 50 that are deserving, specially when you consider there will be representatives from the Modified and Sportsman/NNS divisions. It is the NASCAR HOF, not just Cup HOF. 50 would take ten years, and there will be many more to add to the nominee list by then. (Bill Elliot, Jeff Gordon, Terry & Bobby Labonte, Mark Martin are some examples).

At five entries per year, I can't imagine how ridiculous to the inductees are going to start looking in about 15 years. I'm guessing by then they'll cut the number of yearly inductions down or something.

I read somewhere that Pearson was actually left off of three ballots this year. Insane.

I absolutely agree. They all should be in the HOF, but I don't understand why those chosen should be before those excluded.

Keep in mind they are nominating people like T. Boone Robertson & Barney Hall plus several car owners. I think cutting the inductees to three would be a wise move in around ten years.

There are several current drivers that will be locks for the Hall, J. Gordon, Bill Elliott, J. Johnson, M. Martin, T. Stewart & Kyle Busch if he can sustain his first few years level. There are others who have a legitimate shot depending on how they finish up their careers.
